Reviews from the Advanced Readers Club!
Review by Lauren G., age 15
The novel Fracture will keep you begging for more from new author Megan Miranda.
Delaney Maxwell was just a normal girl growing up in freezing Maine, playing a game of manhunt with best friend Decker and others in the snow, when she fell into an icy lake.
She lost consciousness at three minutes, brain damage started at four, oxygen ran out at five and cardiac arrest started, at seven her heart stopped, dead at ten minutes. She was pulled out at eleven. She died that day, but came back alive six days later. A medical miracle, but did she come back fully alive or half dead?
Now she has a pull to people who are going to die soon. Can she find out why she is alive, if newcomer Troy is a friend or an enemy, and if she can save people about to die? This novel will keep you on your toes. Dark, and chilling, with lots of twists and turns. You will never want to put this book down until the very end.

My Little Sweetheart
Sara Gillingham
$9.99 Open these enticing board books to find darling die-cut pages, adorable artwork, and a fun finger puppet in each.
My Little Sweetheart is just right for sharing at bedtime or any other time.
Recommended for ages 2-4.
Extra Yarn
Mac Barnett and Jon Klassen
$16.99 Annabelle lives in a cold and dreary place, but when she finds a box of colorful yarn and starts knitting, things begin to change. First she knits a sweater, but she still has some extra yarn left over, so she knits more sweaters for family, friends, and even animals.
Oddly, her yarn supply doesn't seem to be diminishing, so she keeps knitting, bringing her dull, drab town to life with colorful yarn--even decorating the trees and buildings.
When an evildoer absconds with her seemingly magical box of yarn, will the magic of Annabelle's creations be history? A book with a wonderful message, brought to life by Jon Klassen's distinctive illustrations.
Recommended for ages 5-8, and as a great gift for knitters of all ages!
Frank Reade
Adventures in the Age of Invention
Paul Guinan and Anina Bennett
$24.95 Before Jules Verne's flying machines and H. G. Wells' spaceships, there was Frank Reade, globe-trotting inventor and original steampunk hero.
Frank Reade magazines were the world's first science fiction periodicals, enthralling millions of readers with tales of fantastic inventions and adventures. Now many of the spectacular images from the vintage dime novel series are being reprinted for the first time in more than a century, along with excerpts from the action-packed stories.
This lost legacy of Americana is interwoven with a biography of the "real" Reade family--inventors and explorers who traveled the world with their helicopter airships, submarines, and robots, and who encountered figures like Geronimo and Houdini. This epic saga is brought to life in the multimedia style of the authors' previous volume, the critically acclaimed Boilerplate: History's Mechanical Marvel. Frank Reade is part-science fiction, part-alternate history, and entirely exciting!
Recommended for ages 12-17.
Pure
Julianna Baggott
$25.99 Pressia barely remembers the Detonations or much about life during the Before. In her sleeping cabinet behind the rubble of an old barbershop where she lives with her grandfather, she thinks about what is lost--how the world went from amusement parks, movie theaters, birthday parties, fathers and mothers...to ash and dust, scars, permanent burns, and fused, damaged bodies.
There are those who escaped the apocalypse unmarked. Pures. They are tucked safely inside the Dome that protects their healthy, superior bodies. Yet Partridge, whose father is one of the most influential men in the Dome, feels isolated and lonely. Different. He thinks about loss--maybe just because his family is broken; his father is emotionally distant; his brother killed himself; and his mother never made it inside their shelter.
So when a slipped phrase suggests his mother might still be alive, Partridge risks his life to leave the Dome to find her. When Pressia meets Partridge, their worlds shatter all over again. Recommended for ages 14+.
Anne of Hollywood
Carol Wolper
$25.00 Skirts may be shorter now, and messages sent by iPhone, but passion, intrigue, and a lust for power don't change. National bestselling author Carol Wolper spins a mesmerizing tale of a twenty-first-century Anne Boleyn.
Wily, intelligent, and seductive, with a dark beauty that stands out among the curvy California beach blondes, Anne attracts the attention of Henry Tudor, the handsome corporate mogul who reigns in Hollywood. Every starlet, socialite, and shark wants a piece of Henry, but he only wants Anne. The question is: can she keep him?
Welcome to a privileged world where hidden motives abound, everyone has something to sell, and safe havens don't exist. With her older sister Mary, a pathetic example of a royal has-been, Anne schemes to win her beloved Henry in the only way that gives a promise of forever: marriage.
Success will mean contending with backstabbing "friends," Henry's furious ex-wife, and the machinations of her own ambitious family, but Anne will do anything to hold onto the man and the lifestyle she adores--even if sticking her neck out in Hollywood means risking far worse than a broken heart.
Recommended for ages 18+. |
