From the Mayor's Desk...

The anticipation is building. Just two weeks until the big day. More than 4,000 people are expected to join us at the 10th Annual Celebration Picnic, March 3, the Village's biggest and best event of the year. Of course, all the right ingredients are in place: great food, musical performances, kiddie attractions -- and you, the proud residents of Palmetto Bay! Special thanks to our dedicated volunteers who step up year after year to ensure that the Celebration Picnic remains a signature success. From the folks who toil over the roasted corn, to our Historic Bus Tour guides, to the police and fire-rescue outreach teams, this is truly an event for the entire community, by the entire community. And the best part, it's free! I look forward to seeing you at Coral Reef Park.
~ Mayor Shelley Stanczyk

Village Council Meeting Update Before we jump right into summarizing the February Council meeting, please note that the Village Council meeting scheduled for the first Monday of March has been moved to March 12. Don't miss any of the action -- watch the entire meeting live, starting at 7p.m. on Comcast Channel 77 or via live streaming video from our website Video/Library page. Here's a quick summary of the Feb. 6 meeting: - In an effort to assist local businesses and allow them to compete with neighboring communities, the Council passed an Ordinance allowing alcohol to be sold (at retail stores) on Sundays. Make sure you rely on your designated driver; alcohol consumption and driving do not mix -- and our police force is always open, 24/7, to ensure the safety of our residents.
- Signs, signs, everywhere? To ensure that the beauty of Palmetto Bay is preserved, the Council put regulations into law that define parameters of temporary signs. Non-commercial temporary signs will be treated in a uniform fashion. Ninety days is the time frame, that is, personal expression signs, temporary political signs and holiday/seasonal decorations cannot be displayed longer than 90 days. For the full text of both of these Ordinances, please contact the Planning & Zoning Dept.
- We need your help! Palmetto Bay will be partnering with Miami-Dade County Public Schools to formulate an Education Compact. This Compact will assist in aligning resources and implementing innovative programs to provide the tools our children need in school and in the future. If you are interested in assisting the Village as a member of the Education Compact Advisory Committee, please contact the Village Clerk or complete and return the application to the Village Clerk's office as soon as possible.
- Speaking of schools... meet you at the playground! Coral Reef Park's playground will receive significant improvements in the near future. Over $130,000 in playground equipment will be installed so your little angels will have a safe haven in which to play.
- Rain, rain, go away... down the drain... Two resolutions were passed that provide much needed drainage projects in our Village: $66,000 and $125,000. So, efforts continue. Your Council remains committed to making certain that our infrastructure is the highest quality we can provide. And that the problems in areas of greatest need are identified and rectified.
