From the Manager's Desk...

Seems like just yesterday, I was welcoming the summer season -- and here we are already talking about the start of the new school year. As you know, the quality schools located throughout Palmetto Bay play a huge role in our Village's character and quality of life. If it weren't for our reputation as the Village of Parks, people might refer to us as the Village of Schools. Your Village officials take great pride in the A-rated public schools and top-notch private institutions located here. We are so pleased to do our part in ensuring public safety in school zones and through extracurricular programs offered by our Police Outreach team. As a resident and former teacher, I can say with great confidence we are fortunate to have a local government that is so supportive of your child's educational experience. Your children's future is our future.

~ Ron E. Williams, Village Manager

Time for Reading, Writing, and 'Rithmatic

Cross Guard

Time to sharpen your pencils, kids. Miami-Dade County Public School System begins its 2011-12 school year on Monday, Aug. 22. Palmetto Bay is home to several outstanding public schools: Howard Drive Elementary, Coral Reef Elementary, Perrine Elementary, and Southwood Middle School. Parents need to contact their children's school to get familiar with the student drop off/pick up policy. Also, save yourself a lot of aggravation by knowing the safe and accepted routes to and from school. And here's a smart tip: leave your home a little earlier in the morning to allow plenty of time to deliver your little ones safely to school. Safety is paramount:

  • Cross the street using the marked crosswalks -- do not jaywalk or drop your child off in the middle of the street;
  • Pay attention to crossing guards and police officers;
  • When parking, look for signage-some spots may be posted no parking;
  • Do not park on sidewalks or block driveways and block intersections;
  • And -- most importantly -- watch your speed. All school zones have a posted 15 mph limit (the hours of reduced speed vary). Pay attention.

Palmetto Bay Policing Unit officers will be on the scene starting Monday, helping parents understand traffic rules and safety. Our Officers are there to help you -- listen to their instructions and heed their warnings. Also visit Palmetto Bay's website for a few remaining community events in the area this weekend to help you get prepared for the new school year.

Two Palmetto Bay Officers Took the Money

ABC-TV

This past Tuesday (Aug. 16), you may have recognized two of Palmetto Bay's finest. Sgt. Jorge Luis Montero and Sgt. Manny Munoz of the Village's Policing Unit appeared on the new ABC show, "Take the Money and Run." In this show, the detectives had just 48 hours to search for a briefcase containing $100,000 in cash that was hidden by two sisters. Through intelligence, intuition, and good old-fashioned detective work, our two Officers were successful. And, they got to take the money home!  Good police work, guys -- and congratulations.

Signs of Public Works Projects Abound

Signs of Public Works activity are all around us in the form of drainage improvements, roadway resurfacing, detour signage, and the staging of heavy equipment and supplies at various neighborhood locations. Add to this various County Public Works projects, including a Water & Sewer Department project that is bringing much-needed water and sewer services to this area of South-Dade. Business owners and residents will soon see signs of this major work in the "Basin-A" area along the US-1 Commercial Corridor. Please visit our Public Works page for complete details.

Hurricane Season is Far From Over

Hurricane Season

The recent brush with Tropical Storm Emily served as a reminder that the 2011 Hurricane Season -- originally predicted to be very active -- does not end until November 30. Do you have a plan in place to survive a major storm? Do you know the locations of local stores that have ample ice after a storm? With myriad publications and websites to review, let's make it easy with a few sources close to home:

  • The Village offers tips, resources, and contact information on its Disaster Preparedness page;
  • County Commissioner Lynda Bell issued an e-news just today that also serves as a good guide for residents; and
  • The National Hurricane Center's Facebook is reliable, immediately accessible from any computer or PDA, and provides up-to-the minute info.

So brush the dust off your survival kit, do some quick reading, and keep your fingers crossed that rumors of this "active" season are greatly exaggerated.
