Village of Palmetto Bay

LastDay

Palmetto Bay e-Currents

From the Manager's Desk...

flag

American humorist James Frederick Dent once said, "A perfect summer day is when the sun is shining, the breeze is blowing, the birds are singing, and the lawn mower is broken." Most of us can relate to this quick-witted snapshot of lazy days ahead; but, rest assured, the Village of Palmetto Bay has a much different definition of a perfect summer day. A perfect day for us is when your kids come home after Summer Camp at Coral Reef, excited, exhausted, and full of stories. A perfect day is when you experience a greater sense of security while on vacation because you completed a Police Watch Order before you left home. A perfect day is when our field maintenance teams are keeping up with the season's heavy growth in our parks and along our right-of-ways. And, it's a perfect day when we can state with confidence we've done all that needs to be done to weather the long hurricane season ahead. By the way, stay tuned over the next few weeks for our special edition e-Currents on Storm Preparedness. Summer is our most demanding season. So, while you may be taking it easy, find extra comfort in knowing your Village staff is hard at work providing top quality service, programs, and operations. Oh, and don't worry -- we've got a spare mower or two all gassed up and ready to clip right through the entire season.

Thalatta Sculpture Approved by Village Council

ThalattaSculpture-6

Good news to come out of the June 6 Council Meeting includes approval of a public art project at Thalatta Estate entitled, "Fountain of Youth." The sculpture features an armillary, a timeless symbol of wisdom and knowledge; and employs an interactive feature: two pairs of bronze-inlay footprints, upon which guests are encouraged to stand and, share a smooch while visiting the Village's new wedding venue -- which, by the way, was just officially honored by Miami New Times. Also during the meeting, proclamations were issued to the newly designated Eagle Scouts of Troops 20 and 457; and to Jackson South Community Hospital for naming June "Men's Health Month." In other action at the meeting, the Council:

  • Passed its Agency Report, concerning FPL's application to install high-frequency transmission lines (along the US1 corridor north of the Village);
  • Voted to ask Miami-Dade County to support co-designation of a portion of 77 Ave. in honor of the late Palmetto Bay resident Samantha Jade Trebbi (see related news story); and
  • Approved an increase from two to four allowable garage sales per year per resident.

Tennis Block Party a Big Hit with Community-2

An estimated 700 people braved the hot weather at the Village Tennis Complex June 5 for three hours of tennis instruction, interactive games, and attractions for people of all ages and abilities. The event also gave the public a perfect opportunity to learn about the benefits of the game -- and to meet our new friends operating the "Friends of Miami Tennis" (FOMT) program. The Block Party was supported by numerous organizations including: Christ Fellowship, Baptist Health, Cold Stone Creamery, Five-Hour Energy Drink, Sunstate Bank, Miami-Dade County Police, Home Depot, Krispy Kreme, Nike, Publix, Tennis Plaza, Prince, Papa Johns, and Ritecare.

SUMMER CAMP PROGRAM

In other Park & Rec news, the Village is still accepting registrations for 2011 Summer Camp, to be offered at one convenient location, Coral Reef Elementary School. The camp is limited to kids ages 5-12 at a cost of $115/week. As an added benefit this year, Village Police are offering their popular RAD/kids program as an optional activity. Registration forms and other camp information is available on the Village website. For more information, call 305-259-1234.

Obelisk Art Project Enhances Traffic Circle Obelisk Fish

The traffic circle art project at Galloway & SW 168 St. has been completed. Area neighbors are responding quite favorably to the beautiful obelisk. If you haven't seen it, drive by and take a look -- it's even more dramatic to view during night-time hours, when the water element of the sculpture is operating. Thanks to the Village Council and to the appointees of our Art-In-Public-Places program for seeing this project through. A special thanks to our Public Works team who did a great job managing the project. See more coverage on the Village Facebook page and the Palmetto Bay News.

Officer Friendly Program Completes 4th Yearrad/Kids

The Palmetto Bay Policing Unit recently concluded it's fourth successful school year of providing top-quality programming for our Village youth. Officer Pete Judge, of the Policing Unit's popular Officer Friendly program, credits great teamwork for the success of the overall program. Judge and his fellow officers Detective Oscar Roque and Officer Patience Glasko managed to reach out to every single student at Howard Drive, Coral Reef, and Perrine Elementary Schools -- for a total of more than 2,400 students during the 2010-11 year. Topic offerings included: Stranger Danger, Conflict Resolution, Bullying and Teasing, Water Safety, and Internet Safety. Over the course of the school year, the "Friendly" team also conducted several career day presentations, DARE classes (Drug Abuse Resistance Education) for 570 kids, and rad/KIDS personal-empowerment training for about 200 students after-school. For information, contact Officer Judge via e-mail or at 305-278-4018.
