Village of Palmetto BayDecember 14, 2010

Welcome

Palmetto Bay e-Currents

From the Desk of the Village Manager
Winter solstice historically has been an important reason for celebration. Considered a time of new growth, rebirth, and renewal, it marks the shortest day of the year, as well as the longest night. It's the turning point of the year. This year, winter solstice occurs on Dec. 21. From this day forward, the light will grow brighter and stronger. Perhaps it is no coincidence that on this very same day, the Village of Palmetto Bay begins a new era as
we begin the move to our new Municipal Center, Tuesday morning, Dec. 21. Clearly, our new Village Hall -- as well as the new faces on the Village Council -- signifies an exciting turning point in our history. What better reason to celebrate the season. On behalf of the entire Village staff, best wishes to you and your family for a safe and happy holiday.
~ Ron E. Williams

Village Council Update
flag The first full meeting of the Village Council for our new Mayor Shelley Stanczyk was held Dec. 6 as the Council acted on a variety of items. New Councilmembers Patrick Fiore (Dist. 1) and Joan Lindsay (Dist. 3) joined seated Vice Mayor Brian Pariser and Councilmember Howard Tendrich (Dist. 2) in unanimously accepting last month's election results; and, approving the meeting schedule of the Village Council and Land Development Permit Hearings for the year 2011. The Council also accepted a $6,000 grant in support of the rad/KIDS project coordinated through the Village Policing Unit that empowers youth with self-defense skills. South Florida Management District also announced it is on schedule for an October 2011 completion of the Deering Estate Flow Way project located at the former Powers property on Old Cutler Road.
Holiday Event Spotlights Student Performances
SymphonyKids The first annual "Holiday by the Bay" is attracting an impressive array of family-fun activities. Please join us Dec. 18, 4-9 p.m., for food and crafts, carnival rides, and outstanding musical performances by several groups including the Greater Miami Youth Symphony. Free to the public, the big event offers a small-town flair, with "Participating Sponsor" Palmetto Bay Knights Youth Soccer leading the way by donating $3,000. Thanks also to in-kind donors BJ's Wholesale Club and to Picture Perfect Art & Custom Framing (305-378-9199). Enjoy crafting your own holiday ornaments, shopping at the Holiday Bazaar, posing with Santa, and climbing aboard one of the many thrilling rides -- all on the grounds of Ludovici Park, 17641 Old Cutler Road. While many activities are free, including the "Dear Santa" letter-writing booth, others activities are provided at a nominal charge. Carnival-styled fare is also available for purchase. It's not too late to sponsor the event and/or participate as a vendor. Send an e-mail -- quickly -- to Mary Fernandez or call 305-721-0033.

Make the Holidays Brighter for a Family in Need
HolidayBaby The Village is hosting a toy drive to help make the holidays a little brighter for those less fortunate in our community. Deliver new, unwrapped toys to any one of the convenient locations throughout Palmetto Bay by Dec. 15 -- or bring it to Santa in person during the "Holiday by the Bay" event, Dec. 18. See the Toy Drive flyer for locations and other info. Feel free to spread the news by downloading and posting the flyer throughout the community.
A Gift from Your Policing Unit
'Tis the season that many of us get so busy we tend to get a little careless and, subsequently, vulnerable to theft or other holiday crime. But fear not -- the Village of Palmetto Bay Policing Unit has compiled a comprehensive checklist of preventive measures that keep the Merry in your Christmas and the Happy in your Chanukah. Please have a safe holiday!
