PatchesCouncil Meeting Update...
Council OKs fixed-interest loan; Public Art for Village Facilities

Mayor Eugene Flinn kicked off a memorable June 7 Council Meeting by honoring 18 Eagle Scouts for their outstanding commitment. He also joined the Council in congratulating Westminster Christian School's Warrior Baseball team for their victory, winning the State Championship for the second year, and in recognizing 30-year veteran Police Officer Alberto Juliachs -- a resident of PalmettoBay -- for his dedication to policing. An exciting event occurred with the award to Miami-artist Nora Cervino of the first Art-in-Public-Places (AIPP) piece to be installed at Park View Cafe. Council also approved the building of an obelisk to meet AIPP requirements at the traffic circle at Richmond Dr. and Galloway Rd. The meeting concluded with Council approval of the signing of a 30-year, fixed-interest loan that consolidated previous park-improvement loans and providing financing for the future Village Hall. Palmetto Bay's Parks & Recreation Dept. is excited to again host the Village's Summer Camp program. About 100 summer campers joined us on June 14, first day of the program, which continues weekdays through Aug. 6. Register your kids today for the program at Coral Reef Park or at Palmetto Bay Park so they may enjoy the myriad activities, crafts, sports, and fun-filled field trips. Message to parents: Please don't forget to bring proof of identification when you pick up your little ones from either park location.

Hurricane Preparation Begins!Palmetto Bay Village Hall staff gathered June 4 to discuss the hurricane season and make necessary preparations to protect Village residents in the face of potential crises. According to NOAA forecasts, there is a 70 percent probability in the Atlantic Basin for 14 to 23 named storms with winds reaching or exceeding 39 miles per hour. Among those storms, eight to 14 could be classified as hurricanes with winds reaching 74 miles per hour and three to seven hurricanes rated as a Category 3, 4, or 5 with winds of at least 111 miles per hour. Keep your eyes out for a Special Edition e-Currents by month's end to fully address all preparations residents should be making. Meanwhile, visit our Disaster Preparedness page on the Village website for tips and useful information.
LightningVillage Tests New Lightning-Prediction System at Palmetto Bay Park

As Florida is the lightning capitol of the world, the Village Parks and Recreation Dept. has purchased a lightning-prediction system to better prepare for the possibility of a lightning strike. Palmetto Bay Park is now home to Thor Guard, a system that advises park-goers and area residents when to seek shelter -- and when the coast is clear. Thor Guard blasts a single, blaring 15-second horn, signifying an 8- to 20-minute window for residents to seek shelter from possible lightning strikes in the area. When lightning threats subside, the horn will blast three times, for five seconds at a time. See photo coverage on...

Vote PinSigns, Signs... Everywhere Signs?

The next election in the Village is Nov.2, 2010, for the Mayor's seat, and Councilmembers Districts 1 and 3. Since signs are often the most visible sign of an individual's intention to run for office, many of the candidates have been busy getting their names out. The Village Clerk Meighan Rader is Palmetto Bay's Supervisor of Elections and as the Village often receives phone calls concerning political signage, she has compiled information concerning the rules that govern political signage. Read more and remember to vote.
