Council Meeting Update...
Howard Drive Elementary Honored: Portion of SW 77th Ave RenamedLadybug 'Hurricane Highway'

Parents and students of Howard Drive Elementary will be excited to see changes coming their way within the next few weeks. Vice Mayor Pariser has sponsored the designation of SW 77 Ave., between SW 136 Ave. and SW 138  Terr., as "Hurricane Highway" in honor of the school. Howard Drive Principal Deanna Dalby was present at Monday's Council meeting (May3) for this honor. "Without the support of the Village, we would not have programs such as DARE and rad/KIDS," said Dalby. Howard Drive is one of several A-rated schools in Palmetto Bay. Palmer Trinity LogoPalmer Trinity School Approved for Village Expansion and Rezoning
The Palmetto Bay Village Council conducted zoning public hearings that lasted into the early hours of Wednesday morning, May 5. The Village's official zoning map was amended to reflect a district boundary zone change from agricultural (AG) and estate single-family five-acre (E-2) district to estate modified single-family (E-M) for the Palmer Trinity Private School, Inc., property located at 8001 SW 184 St. To learn more about the rezoning and expansion, read the full story on our homepage under "News in the Village."

OilSpillMayor Flinn Speaks Out On Oil Spill; Backs Mayor Alvarez
"Palmetto Bay and our 26,000 residents are concerned with the potential impact of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill and the possibility of it looping around to Biscayne Bay," noted Palmetto Bay Mayor Flinn last week, just prior to attending a press conference by Miami-Dade County regarding oil spill disaster planning. "The thought of this industrial accident threatening to destroy our waterways is almost unthinkable... I join with [County] Mayor Alvarez and other officials to do all that is necessary to be prepared." Chris Himmel of Alvarez's South-Dade Office shared a report last Friday, stating there were ""no impacts to the state projected within the next 72 hours... The loop current is far south [80 miles] of the oil and there is no imminent threat that the oil will be picked up by the loop current. Florida continues to make preparations to safeguard the state's shoreline."

Flinn-MDBDeering Estate Flow-way Represents Key Step Toward Improving Freshwater Flows

Late last week, the South Florida Water Management District celebrated the start of a project to improve freshwater flows into Biscayne Bay and to enhance the surrounding coastal wetlands. "This project is significant in the attempt to restore the Everglades and I am looking forward to watching this flow-way project enhance and improve this area by re-hydrating this natural water system," Mayor Eugene Flinn (pictured with Congressman Mario Daiz-Balart, who also addressed attendees) said. "This is a major step in the plan to return the large number of interconnected waterways to their former splendor." See photo coverage on Find us on Facebook
