Council meeting in review...
Millage Rate Adopted; Monument Signs OK'd
Village Council has adopted a maximum millage rate of $2.447 for fiscal year 2009-10, slightly lower than the current rate. This is not final; rather, it is a maximum working rate that the Village administration asked the Council to consider while the budget is being finalized over the next two months. Please review the explanation of millage and its role in the overall budget process. Also at the July 13 meeting, the Council voted to proceed with construction and installation of four separate entrance monuments. Motorists will soon be welcomed to Palmetto Bay via these eco-friendly LED and solar-powered signs at four strategic gateway locations: just south of SW 136 St. on US 1; just north of SW 184 St. on US 1; at SW 136 St. and Old Cutler Road; and at SW 183 Terr. and Old Cutler Road. "We continue to brand and market our Village as a welcoming place to live and work," said Mayor Eugene Flinn. "And these monument signs will set us apart in a tasteful and highly visible way." The contract was awarded to Hialeah-based Acolite & Claude United Signs Co. (AcuSigns). The signs were designed by Tom Grabowski Assocs., Inc. We'll keep you posted when and where the first sign will be installed. |
Are You Ready for a Visit From Grace, Henri, or Rose?
The National Hurricane Center prepares for the season by designating a name for each possible major storm, years in advance. Now that's thinking ahead. Can you say the same? Are you prepared for Grace, Henri, and Rose -- names for some of this year's storms -- with a well thought out plan in place? If not, please review the Village's recently updated Disaster Preparedness webpage: a great source for local, county and state information; smart tips, and general info. One recent addition to our offerings is a link to a site called DisasterSafety.org hosted by the Institute for Business and Home Safety. It offers its own Hurricane Preparedness Guide, helpful videos such as "Glue Your Roof On," and a Guide on Gable & End Bracing. "Some of the information on this site is rather technical," said the Village's Building Official Edward Silva, "but overall, it is an excellent source of important information for all audiences." On a final note: in the event of a major storm, the Village will use e-Currents to issue warnings, notices re Village facilities closings, evacuation and emergency services updates, and more. So, if you know someone who is not a subscriber, suggest they sign up for e-Currents -- now! |
Historic Place of the Month...
Deering Estate at Cutler
The Deering Estate at Cutler, replete with six historic houses, three archeological sites, and 450 acres of protected natural areas, has been on the National Register of Historic Places since March 11, 1986. The primary historic building, known as the Stone House, is a 13,900 square foot, Mediterranean Revival mansion. It was constructed in nine months at a cost of more than $66,000. Charles Deering constructed this "addition" to his winter residence -- the neighboring Richmond Cottage (above) -- for the family, as well as to house his vast collection of fine art and furnishings. Read the full story here. And be sure to tap into an informative video, available via the Deering Estate at Cutler website, where you will also find an abundance of information on events, tours, classes, and various conservation programs. |
Stormwater Runoff - 101
It's common knowledge that reckless disposal of chemicals, paint, or motor oil into storm drains is a major environmental no-no. But who knew that seemingly harmless yard clippings and leaves can also be troublesome. According to a pamphlet just released by the Village's Public Works department, improperly discarded yard waste has a tendency to contribute excessive nutrients to our waterways, whereby triggering a chain of events leading up to an algae bloom which threatens fish. Well, now you know -- and there's a lot more to learn by reviewing this primer on Stormwater Runoff, part of Public Works' ongoing commitment to improving the quality of life for our residents.
