Council meeting update...
Conservation, Crime Watch, and 'Superstars'
Palmetto Bay named April 2009 "Water Conservation Month" at the April 6 Village Council meeting. Together with the South Florida Management District ( SFWMD), the Village remains concerned with saving our precious water resources. Ed Hernandez, Exec Dir., accepted a Proclamation wherein Palmetto Bay expressed its commitment to raising awareness of the need to conserve. Mr. Hernandez also informed the Council that SFWMD has begun canal-bank restoration behind nine Palmetto Bay homes and has plans to expand the program.
Policing Unit Commander Greg Truitt reported that there are presently three crime watch organizations located in the Village. He noted this is a proven way to assist police in reducing crime -- and is a great way to meet your neighbors, too. Contact Officer Pete Judge for information (or call 305-259-1234).
At the same meeting, the Mayor sponsored a Resolution to recognize the accomplishments of Southwood Middle School. This outstanding school, at 16301 SW 80 Ave., is an award-winning Center of the Arts magnet program and has has enjoyed an "A" rating for the past eight years. Following considerable debate, the Council voted to recognize Southwood with co-designating the street signs along SW 80th Ave., between 160 and 168 Streets, as "Superstar Way." Congratulations to the principal, teachers, students, and their parents. Please note, resident addresses will not change.

Upping the Ante to 15,000 Lady Bugs for Earth Week, April 18-25
In honor of our home planet, the Village of Palmetto Bay is once again hosting Earth Week starting April 18 with a kayak & canoe tour along the Village shoreline, and concluding with a bike ride along historic Old Culter Road and through the Deering Estate on April 25. This second annual celebration offers a wide range of activities -- including the release of more than 15,000 lady bugs this year at local schools, a community cleanup, and a Movie Night showing of "Bee Movie" at Coral Reef Park. First celebrated in January 1970, Earth Day is intended to inspire worldwide awareness of and appreciation for our environment. Please check the Village website for details.

'Historic Place' of the Month:
Palmetto Bay's Castle Residence
The Castle Residence was one of the first homes built in the J.W. Dougherty subdivision, an area to the south of the C-100 canal and adjacent to Old Cutler Road. During the 1890's, James W. Dougherty, a world traveler who thought the Biscayne Bay area was the most beautiful spot in the world, platted ten lots in the Town of Cutler. The Castle Residence was the family home of Arthur Castle, Treasurer of the Dade Canning & Preserving Co., and his wife Olive, until 1954. The structure, located at 17800 Old Cutler Road, is a fine example of Mission style architecture. During the 1920's, South Dade was primarily a rural area of scattered farm houses. Although the Mission style was a typical suburban style of architecture prevalent during the development boom of the 1920's in Miami, the structure is fairly unique to this area.
