$2.5 Million Loan; Traffic-Calming Plan Approved at Council Meeting
Palmetto Bay officials unanimously voted for the potential financing of a future Village Hall site, providing for a $2.5 million tax exempt loan. This loan, plus what we have set aside in Village Hall reserves, will allow us to possibly own a "home" of our own. (A Special Council meeting on this matter takes place March 11 at the Deering Visitor Center at 6:30 p.m.) Also Monday, the Council passed a resolution authorizing the Village Manager to fund a traffic-calming plan to improve the following areas: SW 168th St. and SW 87th Ave.; SW 164th St. and SW 93rd Ave.; and, Old Cutler Road and SW 152nd St. And lastly, a zoning ordinance passed that relates to modification of the overall size of temporary, on-premises real estate signs (not to exceed 144 square inches in residential areas). This new law also encourages businesses within the Village to identify Palmetto Bay on its signage.
FamilyCelebration Picnic -- TOMORROW!
Please join us tomorrow (March 6) at the 7th Annual Palmetto Bay Celebration Picnic, Coral Reef Park, 11 am - 2 pm. Enjoy rides, music, great food, other activities, and displays with all your friends and neighbors. Most importantly, this is your once-a-year opportunity to drop Mayor Eugene P. Flinn into the dunk tank, so bring a few extra dollar bills (proceeds go to Kristi House). Please see recent articles on the picnic in the Miami Herald and in the Palmetto Bay News. Special thanks to this year's Community Sponsors for their generous support: Coca Cola, The Corradino Group, C3TS, Eastern Financial Florida Credit Union Sunstate Bank, Pollo Campero, Hole in the Wall Subs, and Waste Services, Inc. Please remember the overflow parking lot at St. Richard's Catholic Church.
ArchPalmetto Bay Branch Library at          Ludovici Park Nears Completion
If you've driven by 17641 Old Cutler Road in recent weeks, you have likely seen the Palmetto Bay Branch Library & Community Center at Ludovici Park quite literally blossom, as landscaping around the recently completed exterior of the new building is in the final touch-up phase. Work inside is also nearing completion, bringing us closer to a grand opening within about six weeks. The County has yet to install shelves and furniture - and books! We invite you to take a ground tour -- and an aerial tour -- of the Library and Community Center as captured by the camera a few weeks ago.
Thalatta Tower'Historic Places' of the Month:        Palmetto Bay's Thalatta Park
With each edition of e-Currents, "Historic Places" features a different historic home, site, or structure. This month, we showcase "Thalatta," the vintage residence at 17301 Old Cutler Road designed and built by the Connett family in the early 20th century. The most recent addition to Palmetto Bay's expansive parks system, Thalatta Park is presently closed to the public for renovation. But, we invite you to visit this landmark home by viewing the pages of a 2006 architectural evaluation report commissioned by the Village, and through vintage photographs compiled by the Village's Historic Preservation Advisory Board.
