Open Market to be 'Re-Seeded' Palmetto Bay's Open-Air Market has been put on hold for the 2009 season while Village officials re-evaluate the program with a focus on hours of operation, vendor participation, and boosting foot traffic.
The 'Spirit' of St. Richard's
The Council recently recognized St. Richard's Church for its strong community spirit. Each year, the church provides parking for the Celebration Picnic. Its close, convenient location is a favorite for hundreds of picnic-goers -- and parishioners, too! |

Shed-Amnesty Program, Financing for Possible New Village Hall Discussed
Village Council Update
Palmetto Bay officials unanimously voted on a shed-amnesty program at the Village's Council meeting Feb. 2. This new ordinance simplifies some procedures to allow residents to properly permit their backyard sheds. The 18-month amnesty clock started Feb. 2 -- so act now! The Council also took steps to authorize the Village Manager to proceed with the potential purchase a new Village Hall by providing for a $2,500,000 tax-exempt loan. Other matters on the February agenda included a resolution finalizing a uniform park-user agreement for all Village parks; an ordinance that modifies fees for organized users, leagues, schools, and private groups at park fields, picnic areas, pavilion/gazebos, recreation buildings, and open-field spaces; and an ordinance addressing on-street parking in the Franjo Triangle/Island area introducing annual fees that will create a fund for possible construction of a parking facility there. |
Be a Celebration Picnic Sponsor!
The Village is once again proud to announce its 7th Annual Celebration Picnic. Join your friends and neighbors at Coral Reef Park on March 7, from 11 am - 2 pm, for rides, music, great food, and other fun activities and displays -- including a new booth hosted by the Village's Historic Preservation Advisory Board. And for local businesses, this is a wonderful opportunity to get your name out by participating as a sponsor. In fact, we are in hot pursuit of a $450 sponsor of the Mayor's Dunk Tank (this year's proceeds will go toward Kristi House). We also need volunteers to set up, serve, and tear down. For information, contact the Parks & Recreation department at Village Hall. Remember to use the overflow parking lot at St. Richard's Catholic Church, off SW 152 St. |
Village Seeks Tree Board Members
Palmetto Bay recently passed a law that takes us one step closer to becoming a " Tree City USA" community. Part of the process is naming a Tree Advisory Board consisting of five volunteer members. If you are interested, you must be knowledgeable in at least one of these areas: urban planning and landscape architecture; or be a tree-related professional such as a forestry professor, a nursery operator, an arborist, or be an environmental activist. Send your information to the Village, c/o Vice Mayor Brian Pariser. But do it soon -- the appointment will be made on Feb. 9. |
'Historic Places' Feature of the Month
With this edition of e-Currents, we introduce a new feature called "Historic Places" spotlighting a different historic home, site, or structure each month. This showcases the efforts of the Village's Historic Preservation Advisory Board. We launch "Historic Places" with a look at the Perrine Community House, also referred to as the "coral rock house," at 900 Perrine Ave. Located in the Village's Franjo Triangle/Island commercial district, this unique structure is presently the home of the Economic Development Council ( EDC) of South Miami-Dade. Also see the original Designation Report on this site, prepared by the Metropolitan Dade County Historic Preservation Board in 1993. |
