Our Mission

WE CARE about older adults, their quality of life, independence and continuing potential

WE BUILD programs, services and relationships to meet the needs of this growing population

WE SERVE the community by empowering seniors, assisting families and enhancing lives.

"As one person I cannot change the world, but I can change the world of one person."

Paul Shane Spear

TOPS Transportation

We provide transportation

services to qualifying seniors for medical appointments. For elderly seniors and those with significant vision or other physical limitations, the service can include a 1-on-1 service feature, whereby the senior is not only transported to the appointment, but has someone stay with them to assist with note taking, paperwork and so forth. The 1-on-1 feature is currently not available for seniors who need an electric wheelchair lift.

Call our TOPS (Transportation Options Program for Seniors) Program Manager for details.

Low Income Heating Energy Assistance Program

With the cooler weather coming on, many people are already preparing for their increased heating bills. LIHEAP (Low Income Heating Energy Assistance Program) assists people with heating costs by providing a payment to the heating provider.  For people over age 65 or with disabilities, early enrollment does not start until November.  Open enrollment for all applicants typically begins in December.

There are some changes from last year:

1. Appointments are required this year instead of 'first come - first serve' at their application centers.

2. There will be a call center, making it easier for people to get answers to questions and/or to make appointments.

Fulton Atlanta Community Action Authority (FACAA) is the agency that runs the LIHEAP program. For information on required financial qualifications and where to apply, go to the FACAA website www.facaa.org.  Look for information about this year's schedule and financial requirements to start showing up on their website in October.

Socks Fit the Bill

A toasty warm thanks to the National Charity League's Alpharetta/Roswell Chapter. Their Class of 2016 held a sock drive in September and donated 75 pairs of socks to our seniors.

Just in time for the cooler weather heading our way!

Make a Donation In Honor Of or In Memory Of Someone Special

Your gift will enable us to provide much needed support for our clients. Gifts can be made to honor or remember a friend or family member. They can also recognize a birthday, an anniversary, retirement or some other special occasion. You can make a gift online at www.ssnorthfulton.org

or by mailing your donation to Senior Services North Fulton, 490 Sun Valley Drive, Suite 202, Roswell, GA 30076. Your support goes a long way helping older adults remain independent.

Combined Federal Campaign

Federal employees can support Senior Services North Fulton, CFC #30561, in the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC). The CFC is the largest annual workplace campaign, raising millions of dollars each year for thousands of non-profits who help so many people in need of assistance. The CFC is a wonderful way for federal workers to support older adults and their families who need Meals on Wheels, transportation, or supportive in-home services such as personal care assistance, homemaker services and respite. All CFC contributions are greatly appreciated. Thank you for your support.

Greetings!

Volunteers are the heart and soul of most nonprofits, and this is especially true for Senior Services North Fulton. We had the opportunity to say thank you at our annual Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon in September. Our dedicated Meals on Wheels drivers, senior center instructors, friendly visitors, office helpers, board members and other supporters enjoyed good food and camaraderie as we honored their service to the older adults in North Fulton. We can not do what we do without our wonderful volunteers. This newsletter is full of stories of corporate and community partners reaching out to assist Senior Services and our clients. We care, and we know you do too.

So, it is no coincidence that the theme of our 2013 fundraiser is Heart & Soul. We hope you will join us as we celebrate the lives of seniors and those who assist seniors in North Fulton. Please save the date, February 16, 2013. Details to follow.

 Sincerely,

Carrie Bellware, Executive Director

Volunteer Appreciation Luncheon Held September 13th
This past year, volunteers donated 23,000 hours assisting seniors at home and at the senior centers. Our annual volunteer luncheon is one way we show how much we appreciate their commitment to our mission.

We were delighted to receive this response to the event. "Thank you so much! The fellowship and meeting a lot of people with the same mindset was great. Love you all so much - you've done so much for me!"

Chambrel Roswell graciously played host to 100 of our wonderful volunteers while local musician, Debra Hughes, entertained volunteers with voice and piano pieces. Many thanks to Car Spa in Roswell, Quik Trip, Chambrel and Board Member, Bonnie Sammons, for donating door prizes.

Tea, Talk & Training Fall Sessions

Our Fall Volunteer Training Sessions will be held at the Roswell Senior Center located @ 1250 Warsaw Road in Roswell. In order to realize our goal for all volunteers to attend one training session each calendar year, we are offering two opportunities in October for those who were unable to attend the April session. A session will be held on Saturday, October 6th from 10am-12pm and Thursday, October 18th from 6-8pm. Important information will be shared by our meal provider and program updates will be shared by our staff. Refreshments and door prizes will be included. Please RSVP with the session date you plan to attend to Heidi at hsowder@ssnorthfulton.org . We look forward to seeing you!

HP Brings Hi-Tech to Roswell Senior Center

Thank you to Hewlett-Packard for completely renovating the computer lab at the Roswell Senior Center, equipping it with state of the art computers, new furniture and beautiful artwork. It was clearly a labor of love. The donation of three new HP workstations had an immediate impact on our Roswell Center seniors.

Participant Winnie Trewick says it all: "I am especially grateful for the help in communicating with my medical providers, insurance company and my church. All of these organizations are going paperless and I will need to access my records that are computerized. I cannot tell you how we thank Hewlett-Packard for making these computers available to us.

Thank you for equipping us with these skills we most badly need in this modern age".

Alone and In Need

A woman with no family lives alone.

On the very day her doctor told her she needed a hip replacement; she fell and broke her left wrist and leg. The broken leg now has three pins and a rod inserted.

A friend from out-of-state came to stay with her for a short time, but soon she would be on her own with only the help of neighbors. Fortunately, before the friend returned home, we were able to start Meals on Wheels and schedule Homemaker and Personal Care services.

After a month of service, she was raving about the care and was more than ready for her early discharge from home rehab. She reported to our supervisor that she could not have done it without our help. Even with everything she was facing, she said, "I love you baby", thanking Senior Services again for the assistance. And how did this woman even get to Senior Services in the first place? A neighbor's husband received our services and encouraged her to call. She knew first hand that we could help. It's what we do.

UPS Delivers Fall Updates to Sandy Springs Senior Center

UPS staff returned to the Sandy Springs Senior Center for a second year of volunteer service.

They freshened up the front garden, finished reupholstering all of the community room chairs and even called Bingo.

Thank you UPS for supporting the seniors in your neighborhood. We appreciate you!

Living with Dementia,

Moving to Georgia

By Miles P. Hurley, J.D., CELA*

www.hurleyeclaw.com

I moved to Atlanta for a new job twenty-two years ago. My family and I own a home and the kids are in high school. We go back home to New Jersey about three times a year to check in on Mom. Ten months ago she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. She no longer feels safe living alone, and I worry about her constantly. I feel bad that she has to move to Georgia and leave her home, but I can't quit my job to move to New Jersey. She's agreed to move to Georgia to be closer to us. What do we need to have in place?

Seniors make the decision to move for a variety of reasons. Maybe the cost of living is better in another place, or perhaps the lure of a more favorable climate is too irresistible. Many times, however, a move is intended to bring an aging loved one and a willing family caregiver closer together. This is especially common when someone is living with dementia. So, what do new residents of Georgia, living with dementia, need to do?

Labor Day Holiday Meals

On September 3rd, volunteers from St. Ann's Catholic Church, Christ United Methodist, Mt. Pisgah United Methodist and Alpharetta United Methodist visited and delivered a holiday meal to our seniors in Roswell, Alpharetta and Sandy Springs. This long lived partnership with Senior Services is greatly appreciated and a meaningful way for individuals and families to connect with seniors in the north Fulton community.

Strategic Planning Gets Jump Start

Board members and staff have been busy planning for the future and ever growing needs of our senior population. We are grateful to the Community Foundation of Greater Atlanta for the Nonprofit Toolbox grant. This grant is supporting our strategic planning process. Pride Philanthropy is working with the Board and staff on this important initiative. We'd like to also thank the community for responding to a recent survey from Senior Services North Fulton. It really does take input from all of us as we prepare for the increasing number of older adults that need assistance, helping them to remain as independent as possible.
