Susan Tumminia Retiring
The Board of Trustees and staff of the Marlboro Free Library wish Susan Tumminia all the best as she retires in early June from the position of Children's Program Coordinator. We, along with the entire community, will miss the energy, dedication, and camaraderie she brought to the job.
Known to many simply as "Miss Susan," Susan Tumminia has served at the Library for 23 years. During that time she has provided a safe and nurturing play and learning environment for children. Through her many successful preschool and after-school programs, including Wee Folk & Family, Story Hour, Toddlertime, and Curiosity Corner, she has introduced thousands of children to the wonders of reading and taught them the important role the library can play in their lives. It is a significant achievement to have launched so many on the path to lifelong learning. In a sign that her career has come full circle, some of Miss Susan's early class attendees have brought their own children to her programs this year.
Miss Susan introduced children to the wonders of nature by bringing in caterpillars that in time turned into butterflies, and tadpoles that turned into frogs. She researched and hired performers for children's programs. She met with vendors, reviewed professional publications, and selected appropriate books and other material for the library collection. She arranged an annual day for high school students from the National Honor Society to run a library program for the little ones. She also worked with the school district to bring a bus to the Library for preschoolers to explore and become familiar with, in anticipation of the first day of school. Her babysitting classes instructed teens on how to become responsible caretakers. She reinforced etiquette and table manners through her popular Victorian Teas, introduced kids to the basics of cooking, oversaw countless crafts projects, and much more.
Miss Susan also initiated many programs at the Library, including Stories in the Park, themed summer camp programs featuring crafts and performers, and the innovative, eco-friendly Alternative Fashion Show with teens.
Not limiting her contributions to the children's arena, Miss Susan also took roles in the Friends of the Marlboro Library's Murder Mystery Dinner fundraising events, created special crafts activities for developmentally disabled adults who visit the Library, arranged fly-fishing workshops, and served as a U.S. passport agent.
Miss Susan and her family will continue to live in the area, where, in retirement, she will pursue her many interests including fishing, kayaking, and, of course, visiting the library.
Parents and other patrons are encouraged to leave memories and messages on the wall of the Library's Facebook page. |
