Open House, Saturday, Nov. 13 from 11 a.m. - 4 p.m.

Dear Friends,

All of us at the Library are excited about welcoming members of the community to visit and learn about what is being offered at the Library. Although newsletters and website announcements can keep you informed, there is no substitute for face-to-face interaction where questions can be asked and answered.

Using the Open House concept, we hope to create a party atmosphere while also informing people about what's new in terms of changes to the interior of the building and new services being offered. We've added some new services and have upgraded how we display others. We strive toward keeping the Library a relevant, user-centered institution that addresses our mission of remaining a center for life-long learning in a swiftly changing environment.

A special thanks to the Library staff for their extra effort in planning the event, and to the Friends of the Marlboro Library who funded the ad, the gifts, the goodies, and prizes! (They are currently seeking volunteers to make holiday wreaths. If interested, talk with them at the Open House.) The larger thanks goes to the citizens of the district who share and support our budget every year.

Each section below highlights the many things that will be happening on Saturday. We hope you will be able to join us!

See you there,
James B. Cosgrove

New Stations and Locations

New Fiction Book section for middle grades - just outside the community room we have created a colorful space for readers of what librarians call "Juvenile" literature. These books were formerly kept with Easy Readers. Now they have a home of their own and a space to go with them.
Audiobook download station - we have designated one of the public computers as a download station for audiobooks. Bring your MP3 player and try your luck. Instructional bookmarks will be provided. Classes coming soon.
New Magazine display area - we've discovered that many people don't realize that we loan magazines to cardholders.  We've set up an eye-catching display in the lobby to attract attention.  The magazine loan period is one week and current issues are immediately available.

Large Print section- this collection is refreshed with 4 new popular titles every month. It is located on the south wall of the building next to the...

Spanish language section - in order to meet the district's growing spanish-speaking community we are adding titles to this collection.

Expanded DVD collection - we've added another section to our DVD kiosk for more titles and we'll be weeding the older ones.

Image Scanning station - before the end of the year patrons will be able to convert print images to digital ones for inclusion with emails or social networking sites. Stay tuned.

Express Computer station - if you're in a rush and just need to check your email or get directions for a trip, this station is located in the lobby and designed especially for you.

Explore and Interact with the Library Home Page

start finding

Because the Library webpage is designed as a blog, library patrons can respond by clicking on the word "comment" at the end of each posting. The blog technology encourages dialogue and helps us discover what services and products you would like to see more of. In addition to the main page where general news and announcements are made, we also have a Local History blog, a Games/Technology blog, and Marblog that covers miscellaneous subjects. When we are open, you can type directly into our Meebo chat box with any reference questions you have. Explore the buttons (like the one above) on the page also and you'll find many links of interest. Remind your friends that they can subscribe to this newsletter very easily from the website also.
Computers and Education

suggestion box

Please put your suggestions for computer classes you would like to see offered in a box we will have on display.
Library staff offer group classes and one-on-one consultations in the area of computer education.  We just held a very popular 6-week series of instruction covering various topics from computer security to buying and selling online. Our building is equipped with secure Wifi also so you can save money using your wireless devices here.
We're excited to learn Tech Librarian, Sue Scott, will be presenting a session at the nationally renowned conference, Computers in Libraries, in Washington, D.C. this spring. We are proud of her and all the other staff who collaborate together to create innovative programming and services for you at the Library.
