Dear Friends,
The snows of late February hit hard in the District. Library staff were happy to assist when the Library could open. Unlike many of our neighbors, the Library didn't lose power. People who lost cable television came in to borrow movies. Many people came in to send important faxes, or photocopy essential documents. Some neighborhood kids came in to get warm because they had no heat at home. One grateful woman used our Internet connection to complete an online licensing test that was being given only on that day! Another, without phone or Internet at home was able to confirm her international flight and reach her family in South America. Some of those who lost power included staff who like many people had to evacuate the area to find accomodations. Library staff were proud to be in a postition to help the public in both small and important ways. The silver lining in all this adversity is that I will have fresh stories about the importance of libraries in the community to relate to legislators on Lobby Day in Albany. |

In-library Laptop Loan Program
The policy, procedural and technical obstacles have all been overcome so we can finally launch this exciting new program. Two laptop computers that the Library purchased as part of a grant will be available to the public for use INSIDE the building. Mothers with toddlers in the Library can now remain in the Children's Area and check their email while attending to junior at the same time. These Internet enabled machines will also come in handy for patrons when the Library computers are all in use (although printing has not yet been enabled). Adults over the age of 18 with clean MHLS library cards are eligible to use these laptops once they sign the appropriate use agreement form and provide photo identification. We thank Kristin Mortensen of Advanced Network & Services, Inc. again for facilitating this experimental program. |

Library Card Amnesty & Account Renegotiation

During the month of March, lost library cards will be replaced ONCE at no charge. So if your card is lost, come in and get a free replacement. Keycards that fit on your keychain, and are therefore hard to lose, are available. Library cards are needed to check out items and use the library computers. Guest passes for the computers are reserved for GUESTS! Starting April 1st, a guest pass will be limited to 30 minutes. During this month of forgiveness, patrons with long-standing overdues or lost items are encouraged to contact Library director, James Cosgrove, who is open to negotiating settlements for restoration of lost library privileges. Historic Kingston Daily Freeman archives online
Ulster County residents, historians, genealogists, and students now have a wealth of unique historic information available concerning the history of the area as found in back issues of the Kingston Daily Freeman. The Southeastern New York Library Resource Council received a grant to digitize historic newspapers as part of their Hudson River Valley Heritage program and they have begun the initiative with the Freeman. At this point, the time period includes 1895; 1903-1912. Point your web browser to "news.hrvh.org" and do a word search. I searched "Cosgrove" for fun and read with interest of a namesake (no relation!) who "carved out" a name for himself in Marlboro in 1908. |
