2009 Gifts to the Library

We are most grateful to the Friends of the Library for their gift to the Library of $2,000 raised during 2009. The majority of these funds will go towards Children's Services. The Friends collected funds for the Library through book sales, raffles, and events such as the Holiday Wreath auction.
We also extend thanks to the estate and family of the late Beatrice W. Conover for a holiday gift of $2,500 for library improvements.  Mrs. Conover was a regular benefactor who grew up in Marlboro as Beatrice Walkter. She gave the Library $100,000 shortly before her death in August.
Broadband Boosted

Thanks to our Library Board and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the Library has recently upgraded its Internet broadband speed from 1.5 megabytes per second to 10 megabytes per second.  The Gates Foundation will pay half the cost of the Library's Internet access in 2010. This will enhance patron access, especially when it comes to viewing art, photos, audio, and video information available online over such popular, and broadband hungry, sites as Facebook and YouTube.
Juvenile Fiction relocated

January brings some welcome changes to the Library including a home of their own for readers of "Juvenile" or "Junior" fiction books (usually ages 7 through 12) who now have a separate space over by the community room. "J" fiction will experience a serious weeding in the months ahead in order to return space for seating in this area. These books were formerly shelved near the "Easy" readers. Juvenile non-fiction books are shelved with adult fiction.  Easy non-fiction books are shelved near Easy fiction.
MidHudson drops NetLibrary for Overdrive audiobooks

At the end of January, the MidHudson Library System will let its downloadable audiobook contract with NetLibrary/Recorded Books expire and replace it with OverDrive. OverDrive will have more popular audiobook titles available but access will be slower as titles are loaned one at a time instead of simultaneously. The service, may also offer music, e-books and downloadable films. OverDrive is expected to be available to the public in March. Stay tuned for details.

As a public service, the Library hopes to make our users aware of Internet hoaxes and confidence games. Keep in mind that banks and company billing depts. won't usually reach out to you via email - it's safer to ignore these emails than to answer them. The bad guys are getting trickier and finding more ways to separate honest people from their money. Librarian Sue Scott has found a number of sites to help you not to get hooked by 'Phishing' Scams.
