FASHION SHOW THIS FRIDAY! (DETAILS BELOW)
Welcome to Constant Contact

We hope you enjoy receiving this email to keep you current with events and services offered at the Library. This online newsletter will supplement the Library's print newsletter, The Inside Story, which now publishes six times a year, but for cost savings will transition to being published seasonally. Everyone with an email account can receive this newsletter. Tell your neighbors that they can easily subscribe from the Library webpage. To opt out of this subscription, just click "safe unsubscribe" at the bottom of the page. The financial advantage to the Library is considerable. Reaching readers often and without space limitations is hard to resist. Through this email, we can inform patrons about events and services and publish as often as we like. Visit our web page as well . It is purposely formulated in blog style to encourage reader comments. |

E-mail Blast Will Help Libraries
The State Division of Budget is proposing an $18 million (18%) cut in Library Aid in the 2009-10 budget on top of the 3% cut in funding that occurred in 2008. This is happening at a time when library use is increasing. We realize that everyone has to share the pain, but a double-digit cut to State library support is more than most agencies are facing.
How will this affect your library service? The MidHudson Library System, which among other things, trucks library materials between member libraries will have to charge libraries a fee to continue these services. The Library will have to look at ways to meet this new expense.
How you can help? Library Lobby Day in Albany is on Tuesday, March 10, 2009. Please email your State Senator and Assemblyman by visiting the New York Library Association site at www.nyla.org and follow the Become a Library Advocate link. The website will find your representatives and send an email on your behalf. We also have pre-addressed advocacy postcards at the Library that we ask you to sign and mail AND you can also sign an online petition.

Tax Forms Available
As you may know, in order to save money the State Department of Taxation decided not to mail tax forms to citizens' home. Where can you get forms for filing your return? At your local public library. We have requested additional forms from the state and some forms are available online. Ask a staff member to assist you with getting the forms you need. NOTE: It is illegal for staff to give you advice on tax forms. We will get you forms that you request, but we do not know what forms you need. Please don't ask for this specialized kind of advice. Federal forms are also available at the Library.

Battle of the Books
Books have been selected for the 2009 Battle of the Books (bookmarks with the list of titles are available at the Library) so now we need to form a team to compete with teams from other libraries. We are looking for at least 10 volunteers in grades 5 through 8 to join the Marlboro Library team (we have 3, so far). Marlboro needs to form two teams of 5 players each. Team members commit to reading 10 books through the spring and summer in preparation for the event in September. Funds donated by the Friends of the Library will be used to purchase books, team t-shirts, food and prizes. Contact Mr. Cosgrove by phone or at director@marlborolibrary.org.

View Historic Hudson River Pamphlets on the Web
A grant to the Library from the Southeastern New York Library Resource Council enabled us to add digitized historic pamphlets to our site on the Hudson River Valley Heritage website ( hrvh.org - select "Explore HRVH" and choose us among the list found under "Select Collection"). The project was funded as part of the observance of the Quadra-Centennial of Hendrik Hudson's discovery of the river named after him. These pamphlets are in the Library's Local History collection, but through digitization these precious artifacts can now be viewed without handling. The four pamphlets are: Hudson River Day Line: The evolution of a hundred years, The Hudson River, Select views of Hudson , and a 1909 souvenir program and guide published to celebrate the 300 year anniversary. Please view these and other historic items we have posted to this site. Feel free to use the comment box to make informational updates or corrections to these items.

Changing Your Catalog Search Pin
If from your home computer you are using "Request-A-Title" on the public catalog and you forget your PIN, you can always call the Circulation Desk and ask for assistance when the Library is open. Now you can retrieve your PIN yourself, even when the Library is closed, by clicking on a new link "Forgot Your Pin?" which will send you an email from Mid-Hudson Library System (not the Library). Please notify us at staff@marlborolibrary.org if you are having trouble with this new service.

Use 'em or Lose 'em
In light of cuts in state aid, we are reviewing reference resources and culling those that are not as well used as others. Items that are being, in popular vernacular, voted off the island are remote access online databases: CountryWatch, Facts-on-File Reference Center and CQ Researcher. To try out these three products, go to marlborolibrary.org and click on the Marlboro Access button (see above). We will be letting the subscriptions on these items expire unless I hear from enough patrons who can justify keeping these resources. Remember that there are other fine resources available through HomeAccess and the Ulster County InfoPortal. Please email me at director@marlborolibrary.org - Subject line: "Save these products" and tell me which product(s) you use. | |
