Dear Boys & Girls Clubs supporters,
This month we've partnered with Forefront Austin to provide you a unique array of perspectives on Texas education. We appreciate the opportunity to speak to you directly on this important issue (our article is number six) and hope you enjoy the other perspectives as well.

Ten Community Perspectives on Texas Education

In case you haven't heard, the Texas Legislature is in town and desperately trying to fill a gaping budget shortfall. The impact of these shortfalls will be felt across Texas, but cuts to public education funding have in past weeks drawn the most vocal and divisive debates. Even with the use of the Rainy Day fund, legislators, educators and parents across the state recognize that they must be creative and frankly honest about what is needed to equip today's students for tomorrow's challenges.

We believe these discussions are best served by hearing from a range of perspectives and information background on the subjects. To help provide that perspective, Forefront Austin has gathered 10 recent articles from our partners. These articles, along with updates, offer insights that can help us all better understand how budget cuts might impact our community.

We encourage you to read, learn and chime in with your thoughts on how Texas can best educate today's students. Add your comment below or tell us what you think on our Facebook Page. Don't forget to "Like" us to get regular updates.

    2.   As the Austin Independent School District is helping students adapt to a changing world, it too is learning how to adapt to new budget realities.
    3.   Changing demands and changing tools are allowing school districts like Manor Independent School District to rethink how best to structure schools to optimize learning.
    4.   Technology is changing the way we can teach... but also the way we MUST teach. See how Girl Scouts of Central Texas is helping girls attain the skills they need to succeed.
    5.   El Buen Samaritano's early childhood education is supporting educational success. What impact will early childhood education cuts have on long-term educational outcomes?
    6.   Public education won't work if kids drop out. Boys & Girls Club of the Austin Area is making a real difference in helping kids graduate.
    7.   St. Michael's Catholic Academy is inspiring, motivating and preparing students to be life-long learners. Does this model, borne from private school flexibility, bear lessons for public education?
    8.   Critical lessons occur outside the classroom. What is the value of extracurricular activities to a child's growth and what is the impact of cuts to out-of-the-classroom lessons on educational outcomes?
    9.   For homeless children, an education and public schools can offer a ticket out of poverty. But the barriers to gaining that education are fierce. Could budget cuts make those barriers insurmountable?
    10.   Not only is obesity costing the state of Texas more each year, it affects the ability of our students to learn. See how AISD is helping kids become healthier so they can learn and succeed in classrooms.
