The Dragon Boat Festival is a centures old tradition originating in South China. Legend has it that a couple of young lovers through themselves into the river when the young woman's parents would not permit her to marry the man she loved. The villagers raced out in small fishing boats to save them from drowning, but they were too late. That's my favorite story, anyway.
Sticky rice dumplings wrapped in bamboo leaves were thrown into the river so that the fish would feast on the offerings rather than the lost young lovers.
The festival is now celebrated by teams of magnificently decorated boats racing for the annual title and are enjoyed among friends and family.
Laboratory Facility Closed June 22, 23, and 24.
