Dear Readers,
According to the calendar, summer is over. The California Legislative session is only waiting for Governor's signature on bills and the usual never-ending budget fights. This is the usual time that we again ask the old, old question...what now? What can we do that will prevent the reactive scrambles of the past few years? CaRPOC has some suggestion included in this newsletter. Some will appeal and some will not. Some will spark and carry you to the computer or to the phones. Others will take you to your local politician's office with binders of handouts and flyers.
And making the day at the Vets a chance to drop off the latest CVMA "model Bill" and asking your vet to read it and discuss it with you?
Still others will get you out of your homes and going to events that you never thought you never thought to consider before. A FFA dog show? Really? A Zoo day for the kids?
Is this a good time to create a fundraiser for a favorite pet project? Never too early nor too late.
Don't forget that the November elections are just around the corner. Even if you haven't done it for a long time, please take the opportunity to go and vote for animal-FRIENDLY legislators.
Finally, CaRPOC is in awe at some of the wonderful articles and discussions that have been appearing on the lists and in private emails. We have an idea about those exemplary authors!
Sincerely,
CaRPOC

Legislation and Ordinances
We all took a DEEEEEP sigh of relief at the failure of SB 250 to pass in the legislature, The overwhelming opposition from many groups -- not only dog owners), convinced the Assembly Members once again that mandatory sterilization of our pets, no matter how it is disguised, is not what California animal owners want.
After the midnight bell rang the Legislature closed, did we all remember to thank those Assembly Members and Senators who voted No or abstained? Did some of us go to the district offices and let the Legislator's staff know how much we appreciated their action?
You can still do it! Email and get the list of legislators who opposed the bill and start working the phone and the computer. This WILL come up again and again and we need legislators to know and remember our names and our positions. |
Brenda Barnette, Los Angeles City Animal Services (LAAS) Manag er
held two town hall meetings during September to discuss the proposed increase of dog and cat limit in the city. Four members of CaRPOC's Executive Board attended both meetings and sent out reports (scroll down for the report) immediately. Thank you all.The overwhelming consensus across the city was to support increasing the limits or even removing all numerical limits. The few dissenters spoke of the irresponsible owners who, unfortunately, would always be there, limits or not. |

OPINIONS! LETTERS TO NEWSPAPERS! PRESS RELEASES!
They do it, why don't we?
Write an article, write many articles, then send those articles to as many media outlets for which you locate addresses. Everyday, there are dozens of articles that are written for the group lists, letters to the editor, comments on articles. These comments and articles are fabulous, but not enough of them from our side go mainstream. Why do so many animal rights opinions and articles get written? Because they send hundreds of them and if only a portion get through, there are enough so that the mainstream media start paying attention. Their articles get repeated in many on-line news outlets. OUR side can do that, too.
Go HERE for email addresses for various media contacts, newspapers,TV, radio and more. Go HERE for more media searches through Voyager. And go HERE for California media contacts.
All it takes is fingers on the keyboard, the will to do it, and the Internet. Let's flood the media with good articles about ordinary people who raise animals, do it lovingly, and love doing it!

What's happening? What CAN happen?
It's been suggested before, but let's look at the possibilities of what ONE person can start!
ONE person might start the plans for your own CGC in the local park.Does your community have puppy socialization classes? Obedience training? Fun matches? A therapy dogs group? A Responsible Pet Owners Day? What do you need in your community? You and your friends can show by example that responsible pet owners care for their communities. Thanks to Marion for these great suggestions that ONE person can start!

I'm here for the Dog Show! A Wonderful Idea
This great idea -- a sticker that reads "I'm here for the Dog Show" -- was started by Marcie Dobkins at the Palm Springs Kennel Club Show this past January and has now spread across the nation.
Alabama is the most recent state to use the stickers and now there's a unique addition!
Show coordinators in Alabama are asking for and getting local businesses to give discounts to people coming in to their establishments sporting a "I'm here for the Dog Show" sticker.
And even more recently a flyer is being distributed along with the stickers explaining the purpose behind the idea!
While this originated in a dog show, why not a cat show, or a horse show, or ?
