S-3424 HR-5434 Puppy Uniform Protection Statute Act "PUPS"
U.S. Senator Richard Durbin (D-IL)introduced U.S. Senate bill S-3424 on May 25, 2010. The Bill is designed to close the "Internet loophole" in the Animal Welfare Act, which allows breeders who sell puppies directly to the public or over the Internet to circumvent USDA regulations required of commercial breeders.Latest Major Action: 5/25/2010 - referred to Senate CommitteeStatus: Read twice and referred to the Committee on Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry.Over the past 15-20 years, there have been various attempts to control in-home breeding by hobbyists and domestic animal retailers. The documents on this CaRPOC web page include a brief history of those attempts; the most recent proposed bill; and related analyses from groups and individual who are opposed to it. To fully understand how this affects future breeding of dogs, please read the documents carefully. |

CaRPOC's Old Newsletters And Social Networking
The California legislature has gone into spring recess, so now is a good time for CaRPOC to examine new innovations in our increasingly fluid cyberworld. Social networking sites are one innovation being used extensively by many groups, and which needs to be utilized much more by animal interests on our side. Many of us are reluctant to move into the Internet world of Facebook,Twitter, LInkedIn, etc, but those who have taken the plunge are coming to understand and appreciate the impact that social networks can have on spreading information. Consider the youtubes that have gone viral recently, both positively and negatively, such as Yellow Tail, the "Conklin Dairy video (later determined to be false and 'spliced,' by the way).
In
order to join that growing crowd, and to take advantage of the possibilities,CaRPOC will be
archiving all past and future newsletters in the next few weeks, with links to Facebook,
Twitter and other suggested networks. The CaRPOC website will also have a
link to our Newsletter archives and the archives will link to "the
world." CaRPOC is working on the mechanics of a blog and when that is
finalized, more information will appear there, too. It is time that the Pet World joins the Cyberspace revolution to bring instant information and we're going there. |
LAAS Has a New General Manager
CaRPOC extends a warm welcome to Ms Brenda Barnette, recently arrived from Seattle, Washington, to become the City of Los Angeles Department of Animal Services General Manager. Ms. Barnette has been CEO of the Seattle Humane Society since 2006, and prior to that she headed the Bay Area's Tony LaRussa Animal Rescue Foundation. After she's settled in to her new position, CaRPOC will be requesting an opportunity to meet with Ms. Barnette. We hope that kennel owners, breeders and pet owners in the area will join us in requesting an informal meeting in the relatively near future.
Again, WELCOME to LA, Ms.Barnette

"WE'RE HERE FOR THE DOG SHOW"
A few months ago, we were thrilled by one woman's imaginative idea. That idea, now a slogan, has spread across the country. Now is the time to publicly thank this miracle worker for the novel and innovative idea. Thank you Ms. Marcie Dobkin
Ms. Dobkin is an AKC judge, exhibitor and breeder. She wanted local residents and businesses to realize how much Dog Shows contribute financially to the communities. As we've mentioned before, these
words on the round yellow stickers have been worn in restaurants, hotels and elsewhere in
towns and cities where dogs shows have been held. CaRPOC's donations have contributed
to thousands of these stickers being seen in communities where
breeders, dogs, exhibitors and those who make dogs shows possible have
visited.
When these stickers are picked up and worn, it important to remember that there is a reason and an obligation attached to them. Tell those with whom you come in contact that you are proud to contribute to their community, and hope that, in return, they remember the economic value of purebred pets when negative legislation threatens their continued presence. |
What's Up With the Bill Boards?
NAIA announces new Bucks for Billboards Campaign!
Welcome to the new Bucks for Billboard Campaign, a campaign
dedicated to awakening the public to the threat against their pets from
animal rights radicals. The billboards serve as the opening round in a grassroots
campaign that will expand over the next year adding a variety of
exciting new media components as the campaign progresses. Thanks to Kathy
Grayson, Marion Bradshaw and the rest of the Bucks for Billboards gang
for conceiving of the idea and for successfully bringing it forward so that
NAIA can take it nationwide. Recently 75 new billboards were posted in the greater
Los Angeles to launch the campaign.
