CaRPOC Newsletter
As the Holiday Season is upon us, CaRPOC members find ourselves reflecting on the past year and on those who have helped to shape our organization in a most significant way. We value our relationship with you all and look forward to continuing our shared goals in the  year to come. We wish you a very happy Holiday Season and a New Year filled with peace and prosperity.

What DO CaRPOC members do?

CaRPOC members do NOT make a loud BANG! when they act, but their actions are speaking volumes.

As an organization, CaRPOC opposition letters have been cited in legislative analyses of various bills the last few years.  CaRPOC funds were quietly donated to help bring Bill Bruce from Calgary, Canada, to speak before community groups and local politicians in an effort to educate about the possibilities of how a well-run Animal Control department can serve its community.  Without fanfare, contributions were made to local and national animal related organizations.  CaRPOC strongly supports Bucks For Billboards with donations and frequent announcement on lists and our CaRPOC website.

But more than as an organization, members of CaRPOC have worked quietly behind the scenes. Members support and share years of experience with groups fighting bad ordinances and legislation.  Within their communities, CaRPOC members have shared the ideas broached and discussed on the CaRPOC Yahoo group list.

SCKBA /Southern California Kennel Breeders' Association is a recent recipient of CaRPOC's community outreach.  Now, almost 60 members strong, SCKBA was organized a scant 10 weeks ago to protest to the incursion of Animal Rights groups into the DACC/Department of Animal Care and Control and other Los Angeles County departments.  SCKBA's incorporation and non-profit filings are in the works.  Meetings arranged through CaRPOC contacts have enriched the group's basic political expertise. CaRPOC extends its best wishes and continued support to SCKBA. We know that it will become a force within the Los Angeles community, a force long needed as the AR groups have become more blatant in their efforts.

Watch for the cooks and bakers at a booth near you soon!

In order to mount more billboards around Southern California, dog show handlers and exhibitors will be displaying their tasty wares at upcoming dog shows!

You've seen the Billboards around Southern California and on the NAIA website.  They have attracted attention from both media and the general public.  The first 100 that went up around the Los Angeles area were great, but now it's time to get another 100 up for more exposure of the animal rights agenda.  Bid high and bid often for these luscious goodies.

Remember the "NAKED TRUTH" Calendar?
 catndogxmas
As with any promotion, there are always a few simply not sold.  Before the "Naked Truth" Calendars are boxed up for miscellaneous awards at shows, CaRPOC is making one last offering for an out-of-date, but absolutely priceless calendar - a calendar to be kept as a keepsake or reluctantly parted with in a high bid auction.  Also look for the possibility of our outstanding models appearing on a mug in a set-up in the next dog or cat show!
maskLocal Fire Station Receives O2 Masks

A couple of months ago, the idea of collecting donations for O2  masks for canines and felines was discussed on the CaRPOC members group list.  While it didn't go further than discussion at that point, President Florence Blecher took the idea to her local Cahuenga Pass Property Owners Association in Hollywood, got the donations, and in November delivered the masks to LAFD Fire Station 76.

After the initial organizing meeting Santa Clarita in November, three more meetings were quickly arranged. There was an eye-opening meeting for Los Angeles County Supervisor Antonovich's Field Representative, Ron Hickling with SCKBA members. Mr. Hickling promised that further meetings with Los Angeles County Departments would include those affected, a strong departure from years of previous task forces and meetings

A meeting with Patti Strand, of NAIA/National Animal Interest Alliance was arranged during the Eukanuba/AKC invitational show in Long Beach.  Ms. Strand presented information and ideas from NAIA's perspective to SCKBA members.

Sarah Sprouse, Manager of the American Kennel Club/AKC Government Relations Department, met with SCKBA members two days later for an exciting and educational afternoon.  SCKBA members took new ideas, goals and handouts back to the full membership.

More meetings planned in the immediate future are with various Los Angeles County Departments and ongoing meetings with various Los Angeles County Supervisors.
Go! SCKBA!
Santa Barbara
After a valiant year-long effort by Santa Barbara county residents against mandatory spay neuter, the final vote went to those who proclaimed that sterilization of dogs would reduce shelter population.  This will be very carefully watched as other ordinances of this sort have actually increased shelter populations and decreased licensing.
Read the final ordinance here.
