Intellectual Property Conference

Join the state bar's Intellectual Property Section as it presents a CLE seminar on the latest in intellectual property law. The seminar includes information on trademark, copyright and patent law.

On the lighter side, but equally informative, legal humorist, Sean Carter provides attendees with two hours of ethics credit, as he explains the reasons real attorneys should never, never, never emulate the fictional lawyers on television.

Shearing to Receive Legacy of Justice Award

Next week, former Nevada Supreme Court Justice Miriam Shearing will become the fourth recipient of the Supreme Court's Legacy of Justice Award. She will accept the honor in a ceremony on October 1, at 12 p.m., in the Supreme Court's Las Vegas courtroom at the Regional Justice Center in Las Vegas.

Though Shearing retired from the bench in 2005, she continues to serve as a Senior Justice and District Judge. During her 28-year judicial career, Shearing has consistently broken ground for women in Nevada. Among her many "firsts" are the distinctions of becoming the first woman elected as Justice of the Peace in Las Vegas, the first woman elected as a District Court judge in Nevada, the first woman to sit on the Nevada Supreme Court and the first woman to serve as chief justice in Nevada.

The Supreme Court presents the Legacy of Justice Award annually to a member of the judiciary whose career has resulted in significant and innovative improvements in the justice system.

New Mock Trial Season Underway: Volunteers Needed!

The 2012-2013 Mock Trial case is now in the hands of participating high school teams who are and preparing for their days in court. But no matter how much they study and practice, the students at some schools will be at a disadvantage this year - unless members of the State Bar of Nevada step in to help.

Teams at 12 of 14 participating high schools have an attorney in their corner, coaching them through the twists and turns of the legal system; Liberty High School in Henderson and Veteran's Tribute in Las Vegas are still searching for attorney mentors - and one of those mentors could be you!

To learn more about what coaching entails or to volunteer, contact the State Bar of Nevada's Law Related Education Staff: Kathleen Dickinson at Kathleend@nvbar.org, (702) 317-1408; and Cathi Britz at Cathib@nvbar.org, (702)317-1416. If you aren't sure this is a job you can do, you are encouraged to ask questions. What it takes may be exactly what you have to give!

Join the Advertising Committee Today

The State Bar of Nevada is seeking interested members to volunteer for the Northern Nevada Attorney Advertising Committee.

The committee meets once a month to review attorney advertisements submitted pursuant to RPC 7.2A and to render advance advisory opinions upon request. Because it is anticipated that review and communication will largely be accomplished through electronic mediums, committee members should be proficient with computer, e-mail and Internet use.

To be considered for the vacancies, submit a committee appointment application, letter of interest and resume to State Bar of Nevada, Attn: Advertising Committee, 600 E. Charleston Blvd., Las Vegas, NV 89104, or e-mail to luisac@nvbar.org.

Craig P. Kenny & Associates Host 16th Annual Open House

Craig P. Kenny is inviting Las Vegas law students, lawyers and support staff to its annual open house. This social event is timed to coincide with the release of the fall bar exam results.

This year's party kicks off on October 12, at 5 p.m. in the parking lot of the offices of Craig P. Kenny & Associates, at 501 S. 8th St. Food, drinks, live music and other entertainment will be provided.

This gathering is an opportunity for new attorneys to celebrate passing the bar and a chance for more seasoned bar members to mix and mingle. The entertainment this year includes a live DJ and catering by The Naked City Pizza Shop. Those who want to burn off that pizza with a friendly game of basketball are encouraged to bring their gym shoes.
