Volunteer Attorneys Needed for Disaster Legal Services Program

From severe winter storms to heavy rains, from flooding to fires, Nevada is not immune to national disasters. Since 2004, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has declared four major disasters in our state.

With this in mind, The Young Lawyers Section (YLS) has teamed up with FEMA and the ABA to seek volunteer attorneys willing to provide pro bono legal assistance to victims of natural disasters. As part of the Disaster Legal Services (DLS) program, volunteer attorneys provide all legal services to victims, free of charge.

The legal areas most likely to need representatives include: insurance claims, landlord-tenant and other housing problems, home repair contracts, consumer protection matters, mortgage foreclosures, replacement of wills and other important legal documents, drafting powers of attorney, estate administration, and preparation of guardianships and conservatorships.

Please note that fee-generating cases are not covered under the DLS program and volunteer attorneys will not be reimbursed for telephone calls, mileage or any other case-related expenses.

Those interested in volunteering should forward their names, addresses, phone numbers, e-mail addresses and practice areas/legal interests to Scott Lachman at slachman@nvcourts.nv.gov.
