Eighth Judicial District Redistributes Cases

The Eighth Judicial District Court redistributed a substantial amount of its cases, per Administrative Orders 12-03, 12-04 and 12-05. The case reassignment became official on Monday, August 6, and will impact both civil and criminal cases.

For a full list of inter-departmental case transfers, please visit the August 2012 Case Reassignments section of the Clark County Courts' website.

To view information about a specific case transfer, or to confirm an upcoming hearing date, please review the posted administrative orders and the electronic case management system in Odyssey. Those eligible under SCR 48.1 may exercise a peremptory challenge as a result of a case reassignment.

CLE Seminar: A Picture is Worth 999 Words

The State Bar of Nevada's upcoming CLE seminar, A Picture is Worth 999 Words, will bring attendees an enlightening look at jury bias and its connections to the use of technology in the courtroom. Now that technology is nearly always at our fingertips, jurors expect to receive information in the visual format to which they have become accustomed. And they expect to be entertained at the same time!

Using visual displays in conjunction with oral presentations has become the most effective way to communicate with a jury. This is because pairing the visual and auditory enhances both memory and comprehension. Presenter, Dr. Daniel Dugan will delve into the hows and whys of effective visual presentations.

The seminar takes place at the Lloyd George Federal Courthouse in Las Vegas on Thursday, September 27 from 4 p.m. to 5 p.m., and at the Northern Nevada Bar Center in Reno on Friday, September 28, from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Attendees can earn one CLE credit. Visit the state bar's website to register.

Save the Date: 2012 Champions of Justice Luncheon

Each year the legal community in Nevada joins Nevada Legal Services (NLS) in celebrating those who contribute their time and energy to advancing legal aid service provision in our communities. The 2012 Champions of Justice Luncheon will take place in both the north and the south: Wednesday, October 24, at the Las Vegas Country Club, and Monday, October 22, at the Peppermill Resort Spa Casino in Reno. The luncheon will run from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. in both locations.

Among this year's award winners are the Honorable Stephen Dahl and Nevada Attorney General Catherine Cortez Masto.

Expand Your Client Base with the State Bar's Lawyer Referral & Information Service

Advertising isn't the only way for State Bar of Nevada members to build a client base or expand a practice; consider joining the bar's Lawyer Referral & Information Service (LRIS) to do both.

The LRIS is a non-profit, public service provided by the state bar to its members. LRIS refers more than 25,000 callers to member attorneys each year. The service can be customized to fit the needs of individual practitioners; when signing up, attorneys may select from a wide range of practice areas and Nevada locations in order to define the type of referrals they would like to receive.

To sign up or to learn more, e-mail Programs and Services Manager Lori Wolk at loriw@nvbar.org or apply online at the state bar's website.

Experienced Attorneys Needed for Partners in Pro Bono Mentorship Program

William S. Boyd School of Law and Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada (LACSN) are partnering up, once again, for the annual Partners in Pro Bono Mentorship Program. This program matches experienced volunteer attorneys with law students, as they work together on new pro bono cases. Attorney mentors benefit from the law student's assistance, while the students receive hands-on training with an experienced lawyer. Finally, the partners at both ends of the experience spectrum get the satisfaction of knowing they've helped someone in need.

The program will kick off with an orientation on Thursday, September 6, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.,in room 117 of the law school. At the orientation, attorneys will meet with their law student partners, receive their case files and discuss the expectations of both the students and the attorney volunteers.

More information is available on a downloadable flyer. To register or ask questions, e-mail probono@lacsn.org or mkushnir@lacsn.org. When registering, please include a list of practice area(s) in which you can take a pro bono case and indicate whether or not you are able to take on a Spanish-speaking client. Available cases cover a broad spectrum of civil matters, including, but not limited to domestic relations (divorce, custody, support, domestic violence, guardianship and adoption), consumer protection, bankruptcy and probate. The deadline for registration is Tuesday, August 14.

November's Military List for Nevada Lawyer: Don't be Left Out!!

Nevada Lawyer's November issue coincides with Veteran's Day and the magazine editors would like take this opportunity, as in years past, to recognize State Bar of Nevada members with military backgrounds.

If you serve or have served in the U.S. military, please send an e-mail to nvlawyer@nvbar.org. Your e-mail should include: your full name as you would like it to appear, your bar number and branch of service (only one will be included, so select the one you would most like to see listed). Please let us know if you served as a JAG officer as well.

We would love photos from your time in uniform, if you have them. Photos must be of members during their military service, preferably in uniform (no law firm portraits). They must be submitted in high-res digital format. Preference will be given to photos that have not appeared in years past.

The state bar does not keep records of military service, so we only know what our members tell us. Please don't be left out; send us your information so that we can include your name in this special feature. The deadline is September 14, 2011. Remember to send the information even if you have been included in previous military issues.
