Building a Better Boyertown Presented with Two Prestigious Statewide Awards by Pennsylvania Downtown Center

Lancaster, Pa. - Building a Better Boyertown (BBB) last night was recognized with the 2010 award for Program-Wide Physical Improvements & Design and the 2010 award for the Promotions & Marketing of Special Events at Pennsylvania Downtown Center's (PDC) annual Townie Awards gala. BBB Main Street manager, Heather Oxenford, accepted the awards on behalf of the organization, which was selected for the awards based on its impressive array of accomplishments toward the ongoing goal of enhancing downtown Boyertown as a destination and a place where residents and visitors alike wish to live, work and spend time.
The Townie Awards are a festive and venerable element of PDC's annual conference, and are designed to recognize the commonwealth's core communities for creation and implementation of programming and events that exemplify the goals of PDC's community revitalization mission. Pennsylvania Downtown Center's nearly 300 member organizations are eligible for the Townies, making the awards an annually anticipated event.
"Whether through fundraising, the creation of community events, the enhancement of numerous historic facades, the establishment of a thriving farmers market, or any number of other impressive accomplishments, Building a Better Boyertown has proven itself as a model community in the revitalization world and throughout the commonwealth," said Bill Fontana, PDC's executive director. "I am extremely proud of the program's work and look forward to seeing their continued efforts in the years ahead."
PDC's statewide conference is held in a different commonwealth community each year in order to highlight the respective city or town's accomplishments in downtown and neighborhood revitalization. The 2010 conference, held in downtown Lancaster, was attended by more than 400 individuals, including borough and municipal officials, experts in community planning and landscape architecture, and dozens of Main Street and Elm Street managers. Highlights of the conference included nationally-recognized speakers, more than two dozen educational sessions, walking tours in the downtown and mobile workshops to Mount Joy, Manheim, Elizabethtown, Lititz and Ephrata.
Building A Better Boyertown's Main Street Manager, Heather Oxenford said "Our charming town embraces the arts and the timeless quality of fine craftsmanship along with our Pennsylvania Dutch Heritage. Boyertown provides a memorable experience like nowhere else for family, friends and the traveler. With great appreciation to our volunteers, funding through DCED, support through PDC and the commitment of other organizations that make our events and projects possible, it expresses the support of our community. The Boyertown Community truly displays a sense of place!"
Jake Lea, Building a Better Boyertown's President stated that "This is a result of community devotion on the part of BBB volunteers, Boyertown area residents and the Borough of Boyertown. I am extremely appreciative to PDC for their recognition of these efforts. Boyertown has always had a community spirit and this is just another example of how the citizens, and organizations work together to make a significant impact"
BBB's Mission: To keep Boyertown a special place by preserving its historical heritage, maintaining its link to the past and cultivating a vibrant present and prosperous future by providing the opportunities for business, industry, and the arts while enhancing the quality of life today and for future generations. Pictures at an Exhibition: Joe Hoover shows at Studio B Local watercolorist and art collector Joe Hoover will present his show "Pictures at an Exhibition" at Studio B in Boyertown, PA June 18, 2010 through July 12, 2010. The show's name is inspired by Modeste Mussorgsky's piano suite of the same name and invites you to a visual tour of the artist's collection.
Hoover has had a lifelong interest in art, but began painting seriously after he retired from teaching over 15 years ago. Several classes with James McFarlane and Tara Grim helped steer him solidly into watercolor. Hoover's work consists of generously colored florals as well as landscapes and abstracts which are inspired by his interests in music (he sings and plays several instruments) and gardening.
Hoover is a member of Berks Art Alliance, Chester County Art Association, and Pottstown Area Art Guild and participates in over two dozen group and solo shows each year. He is also a participating artist in Boyertown's Bear Fever project (www.bearfever.org); he put his skills to use painting "Flora" Hul-bear Too as well as the Ott Funeral Home bear.
An opening reception and artist meet-and-greet for "Pictures at an Exhibition" is scheduled for Friday, June 18 and is open to the public. The show is proudly sponsored by Jody and Loren Hulber of Fieldstone Farm in Macungie, who also sponsored the "Flora" bear.
