BBB Announces Volunteer(s) of the Year for 2009
Click here to view Oktoberfest Slide Show
Jeff and Cindy Karver
Jeff
and Cindy Karver are the driving force and reason why Building A Better
Boyertown has began to host Oktoberfest in Boyertown. In January 2008,
Building A Better Boyertown announced the beginning of "3rd
Saturday's". These Saturday events were to promote the businesses of
Downtown Boyertown, encouraging
the community to get involved and reconnect with each other. On
Saturday February 16, 2008 the Karver's attended Boyertown's first 3rd
Saturday event for an evening out with friends, enjoying dinner. After
this evening, Jeff Karver wrote a letter to BBB with an idea for a
larger community event.
The Karver's created their own
"Oktoberfest committee", organizing members and meetings. BBB marveled
at how this couple found time to spearhead such a project. Oktoberfest
in Boyertown was not only to serve as an event which would bring the
community together, but to serve as a fundraiser for BBB as well. The
Karver's attitude about such a community event was contagious as they
motivated others to get involved. This couple was a maelstrom of
enthusiasm and energy, the number of community members they got
involved with the event and the community is commendable.
Because
of their unselfish donation of time, talent, commitment and
contributions, Oktoberfest in Boyertown profited more than $10,000 in
its first year and more than $11,000 in its second year. It is without
a doubt that Building A Better Boyertown and the Boyertown Community
are stronger because of the commendable display of the Karver's.
It
is obvious that Jeff and Cindy Karver love their community as
demonstrated by the many hours of time that they have dedicated to such
a successful event. They continue to exhibit a commitment to the
community's revitalization efforts through the unselfish donation of
their time and talent as they once again have chosen to chair the
Oktoberfest committee for 2010.
Jeff and Cindy Karver carry an
ideal combination of poise and spunk, generosity of character and
strength, selfless hard work and commitment, as well as appreciation
and encouragement for others' efforts. Their objective, which they are
obvious to communicate every opportunity they get, and which they
unquestionably display through their actions, is a true love, support
and dedication to their community. The dedication they display builds
strength in individuals, the organization, and the community. As
members and volunteers of BBB, the Karver's strive to bring the
community together, making Boyertown "A Special Kind of Place".

Become a Tree Tender!
Become part of the "growing" TreeVitalize initiative, an effort led
by Pennsylvania's Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR) to increase tree cover and the many benefits that trees offer us.
Trees not only improve air quality, but studies show greening can serve as an economic stimulus tool and increase nearby property values by up to 30%. Properly placed trees help to moderate indoor/outdoor temperatures, and can reduce energy costs, noise pollution and crime rates, among many other environmental, social and health benefits.
Tree Tenders is a training program that empowers concerned residents to make dramatic strides towards restoring and caring for their local tree canopy. Join us for eight hours of hands-on training that covers tree biology, identification, planting, proper care, and working with your community. The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society (PHS) in collaboration with Penn State Cooperative Extension developed this course for citizens
and experts alike. Since 1993, over 3000 community volunteers from 200 Pennsylvania neighborhoods have become trained Tree Tenders.
Registration is required. The course offers ISA, PA LA, PLNA and Act 48 ceus.
