Pictorial Book

Boyertown's Second Pictorial History Book

Features DVD of Interviews with Boyertown Notables

A two-hour DVD, Coming Together-Interviews with Special People from a Very Special Kind of Place-Boyertown, PA, included with Boyertown's second pictorial history book, compiles interviews of 16 men and women of Boyertown's past and present.

Farms and orchards, civic and service organizations, and a focus on volunteers who have devoted countless hours to the betterment of the community since it was chartered in 1866 became the core of the vision for the second book along with off -Main Street businesses, everyday life, and scenes of the area not included in the first book.

Chapter titles featured in the 169-page volume are Main Street Revisited, Scenes of the Area, Area Farms and Orchards, Civic Organizations, Off-Main Street Businesses, Renowned Citizens, and Celebrations. Each chapter, authored by different individuals, provides a variety of "voices" and writing styles to the effort.

The interviews included the participants' memories of Boyertown's past; the people they knew and admired whose leadership, vision, and energy formed the character of the community; thoughts and reflections about the unique characteristics which led to its strengths and successes; and hopes and plans for the community's future.

Sandy Wood

A Woman of Many Talents: Sandra Wood-

International Watercolor Artist, Career Art Teacher,
Engaging Actress-Exhibits at Studio B

Mention the name Sandra Wood, and many Boyertown Elementary School graduates over a 40-year period remember an energetic art teacher who created and brought her wide-mouth frog puppet Ollie to classes to demonstrate the techniques of van Gogh, Cezanne, and Matisse or the wedding for Ollie and Clara Jean, in which the entire school participated.

Others recall her work in local theatre, Crayola Art and Literacy and Art in Math programs, or-most recently-her 2009 summer classes at Studio B, Boyertown's art gallery and teaching studio, during "I Can Be a Puppeteer" or "I Can Be a Storyteller" weeks.

But for her friends and fans, Wood's "second act" as the poster child for a satisfying and successful life as a fine artist who travels the globe as a plein air painter is most inspiring. Her wide-ranging travels, teaching, and natural energy and enthusiasm for life combine to inspire landscapes and still life paintings that reflect her delight in refreshing images lush in color taken from her environment.

In an exhibit opening at Studio B on Friday, February 19, 2010, 5:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m., Sandra Wood brings her world to Boyertown in an array of paintings demonstrating this prolific painter's love affair with color and form.

"I like starting with something realistic like the three pears that appear on the exhibit's promotional poster and postcard," Wood shared. "I like the paint and color to be loose and juicy, yet I want to control the contour of the shape and the shading."

"We live in an age when our world is bathed in artificial light and fast-paced altered images. My work focuses on reacquainting the viewer with the nuances of natural light, color, and form. All my images are personal expressions of actual objects or places in my environment," she noted.

"My work reflects a continuous effort," Wood explains. "Like an athlete in training, you have to work at it every day to improve and push yourself to go beyond the next level." During her travels Wood makes sketches and paintings of the many sites and places she visits and binds her sketches into booklets.

Always the teacher, Wood is dedicated to promoting art education and happy to have a chance to continue to teach locally. Wood is a long-time board member of the Pennsylvania Art Education Association--awarded recently as the Outstanding Retired Educator Award--and offers perspectives gained from her travels.

Global changes to teaching art fuel her dedication. "Art is essential in the growth of children," Wood offered. "When I visited China, I learned it is changing its approach. They have discovered that graduates need verbal, interpersonal, and higher-level thinking skills to ensure their success. They recognize that enhancing creativity and problem-solving skills is an integral part of a successful education."

Sandy Wood's exhibit "Aquarell"-runs at Studio B, 39A East Philadelphia Avenue, Boyertown, through March 16, 2010.

Studio B welcomes visitors to the exhibit during its regular hours--Thursday, Friday, Saturday 11:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m., Fridays 6:00 p.m.-8:00 p.m.--and during scheduled art classes.

Visit www.studiobbb.org  for additional details about the studio.

The mission of Studio B is to support visual and literary artists; provide visual, literary, and communications art-related experiences and classes offered by highly-trained local artists and teachers; and to offer "Getting to Know You" opportunities for folks to meet and learn more about each other and participate together in art- and wellness-related activities.

Studio B opened in December 2008, under the umbrella of Building a Better Boyertown (BBB), a Pennsylvania Downtown Center Main Street program, funded by the Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development and supported by the Berks County Community Foundation.

The studio is the home of the Arts and Activities Alliance which began in 2007 by staging art exhibits, offering field trips to artists' homes and studios, and providing opportunities to enhance creativity, health and wellness through classes in visual and literary art, seminars, and workshops. Studio B is one of five operating committees of BBB, a 501c3 organization.
