A Primer for Investment Trustees

by Jeffery Bailey

Put your mind at ease on one critical point: extensive investment expertise is not required for you to serve effectively in a trustee role. Nevertheless, for you to exercise good judgment in making decisions, you should possess at least a working understanding of basic investment principles and concepts. We believe that you can acquire this knowledge with a modicum of effort. The purpose of this monograph is to provide trustees, particularly if they are new to their role, with a primer that will help them begin to successfully fulfill their responsibilities.

June 2011

Greetings!

CFA Minnesota: Most Outstanding Society!

Last month, I wrote to you from Scotland where I was attending the CFA Institute Society Leader Conference with Society leaders from around the world.  While there, your society was recognized as the Most Outstanding Society in our size category from among the 137 societies globally.  We're very proud of this recognition of the hard work of our board and veritable army of volunteers.  Thank you for all the work you do to make our society outstanding!

Summertime at CFA Minnesota means Strategic Planning, and this year your Board of Directors will be developing our next 3-year plan.  Keep a look out for information about this process and feel free to contact me to get involved.

Won't you join us at an upcoming event?  Take some time to mark these on your calendar. We'd love for you to join us:

Best Regards,

Maren Amdal

6/23/11 - A Primer for Investment Trustees

with Jeff Bailey, Target Corporation

A Primer for Investment Trustees provides an overview of key investment concepts critical to an investment trustee's effective fulfillment of their role.

Although this luncheon's main audience is investment trustees, it can be beneficial to investment professionals and other parties who work directly or indirectly with trustees, such as a fund's staff, investment managers, actuaries, accountants, custodians, and lawyers. All these professionals can benefit from understanding the investment trustee's perspective, circumstances, and responsibilities. Such an understanding will facilitate communications and allow all parties to work together effectively.

Jeffery V.  Bailey, CFA, is Director, Financial Benefits & Analysis at Target Corporation, where he supervises the investment programs and administration of the company's defined-benefit and defined-contribution plans, nonqualified retirement plans, and health and welfare plans. Formerly, Jeff was a managing partner of Richards & Tierney, a Chicago-based pension consulting firm specializing in quantitative risk control techniques. Prior to that position, he was Assistant Executive Director of the Minnesota State Board of Investment, which manages the pension assets of Minnesota public employees. Jeff has published numerous articles about pension management. He co-authored the textbooks Investments and Fundamentals of Investments with William F. Sharpe and Gordon J. Alexander and co-authored the Research Foundation of CFA Institute publication Controlling Misfit Risk in Multiple-Manager Investment Programs with David E. Tierney. Jeff received a BA in economics from Oakland University and an MA in economics and MBA in finance from the University of Minnesota.

The CFA Society of Minnesota will have a few Board positions open up in September, the beginning of the 2011-2012 fiscal year. This directory will be a phonebook-like listing of qualified members of CFAMN who are willing to answer the phone and able to share their expertise on a range of specific industry topics.

For more information, click here. To be listed in the directory, click hereIf you'd like to get involved with the development of this resource, contact Sam Smith or Karen Florez.

WHAT DID I MISS?:

May Events Summary

05/12/11 - The Risks that Hide in Plain Sight

John Gavin, CEO of Disclosure Insight, gave a very interesting presentation pertaining to SEC investigations and how companies can try to downplay potentially serious investigations through vague language in press releases. John provided a list of questions investors should ask company management when SEC investigations are disclosed and used examples to highlight the potential risks that can be overlooked if an investor isn't careful.  One of our most successful events to-date, John's presentation received high praise from attendees and we look forward to welcoming him back for a repeat performance!
