The Intelligent Investor

by Benjamin Graham

Graham's sage advice, analytical guides, and cautionary tales are still valid for the contemporary investor, and Zweig's commentaries demonstrate the relevance of Graham's principles in light of 1990s and early twenty-first century market trends.

Since it was first published in 1949, Graham's investment guide has sold over a million copies and has been praised by such luminaries as Warren E. Buffet as "the best book on investing ever written."

"O ye'll tak' the high road, and I'll tak' the low And I'll be in Scotland afore ye For me and my true love will ne'er meet again On the bonnie, bonnie banks o' Loch Lomond."

- Andrew Lang

Greetings!

I have the pleasure of writing you from the Isle of Skye, in bonny Scotland, having just today driven by Loch Lomond. I am here for the CFA Institute Annual Society Leader Conference this week in Edinburgh and came in a few days early for some sight-seeing. What a beautiful country to host this truly unique opportunity to meet society leaders from around the world to exchange ideas. Minnesota has three representatives at this conference - myself, our President and Vice President - and we're all certain to come home invigorated and inspired with new and creative ideas to offer our local society members.

So, onto the news of the Society! Preliminary feedback from the Annual Survey showed a preference for a "tighter" newsletter, so this is our first attempt to do this for you.

Please take a moment to review and put some of these events on your calendar. We'd love for you to join us:

These events provide just a fraction of the ways you can get involved with the local Society and its members. Read on for more ways to get involved. We look forward to seeing you soon.

Best Regards,

Maren Amdal

Executive Director

5/12/11 - The Risks that Hide in Plain Sight

Breakfast!
with John P. Gavin, CFA

Using data culled from the thousands of SEC filings routinely examined by its analysts, Disclosure InsightŪ founder and CEO, John P. Gavin, CFA will use real world examples of how public companies can often use careful word choice, omission, and spin to mislead investors about disclosed risk events.  You will be educated on the reasons why investors seemingly ignore obvious risks, disclosure "tricks" that can be used against you, and questions you should ask when risk events are disclosed.  This thought-provoking session will better equip you to assess those risk events that are disclosed with an aim toward avoiding potential problems that can hurt performance.

Annual Membership Renewal Time

Springtime is also our Membership Renewal time and we would like to take this opportunity to welcome you back!  Your membership places you among nearly 1200 other Twin Cities professionals who have chosen to pursue and maintain the CFA designation and uphold ethics in our industry and community.

If you are a member of both CFA Institute and the CFA Society of Minnesota, you will receive renewal information from CFA Institute, or you can simply log onto your MyCFA account and renew.  If you are a local Society member only and not yet a member of CFA Institute, you should have received an email about membership renewal recently with easy instructions regarding the renewal process.  Anyone who renews their membership in the 4th quarter (April, May, June) of the membership year (July 1st through June 30th) will be renewed through the end of the next membership year (June 30th, 2012).  Contact Cynthia Reiber, Membership Coordinator for any needed assistance with your renewal process.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES:

Board Nomination Committee

  Now forming ...

The CFA Society of Minnesota will have a few Board positions open up in September, the beginning of the 2011-2012 fiscal year.  Former Board President, Tony Carideo, is now forming a Nominating Committee.  This ad-hoc subcommittee will have the primary role of identifying and recommending a slate for Board election. Two to three members at large are needed to join two to three members from our current Board of Directors to enact this search.  Contact Tony Carideo if you are interested in participating on this Sub-Committee.

CFA Minnesota Media Directory

Great New Member Asset in development!

The Media Directory is meant to do what Cliffs Notes did for English Class: help the average guy find someone who can cut to the point and provide a better understanding of finance related topics.  This directory will be a phonebook-like listing of qualified members of CFAMN who are willing to answer the phone and able to share their expertise on a range of specific industry topics.

For more information, click here To be listed in the directory, click here.  If you'd like to get involved with the development of this resource, contact Sam Smith or Karen Florez.

2012 Annual Economic Dinner Sub-Committee

  Now forming ...

It is time to identify and hire the speaker for our 2012 Annual Economic Dinner. If you would like to contribute to our largest annual event, this is the time to hop on board! To be a part of this selection process, please contact Maren Amdal
