Investing from the Top Down: A Macro approach to Capital Markets
by Anthony Crescenzi

In Investing from the Top Down, Anthony Crescenzi, esteemed financial author explains how to develop new, highly effective investment strategies by taking a macro view of the factors shaping industries and markets. Emphasizing the importance of economic and market cycles (as opposed to a bottom-up approach, which places valuation ahead of the big picture) top-down investing is better suited for today's global economy and will likely become the dominant strategy in the future.

Crescenzi provides more than fifty tools for analyzing domestic and international trends and indicators, such as GDP growth rates, inflation, interest and exchange rates, and energy prices. He then explains how to narrow your search down to region, total sales, price levels, competition, and entry/exit from market to make astute buying and selling decisions.

Registering for Events
A note about event registration through our new website:
For the past year, we have been taking advantage of the registration portal provided by CFA Institute.  The new system includes attendance tracking, automatic application of CE credits for members, and an estimated savings for our society of more than $10,000 per year.

Using the system is simple.  Each individual registrant must have a CFA Institute website log-in name and password.  All that is required is first/last name and a valid email address.  Unfortunately, at this time the new system does not allow guest registration in the same way our previous application allowed.  Guests are welcome, but will need to have their own user name and password.  As host, you are welcome to create this account for them.

On-site registrations will be allowed as available, payable with check or by registering online on-site.

November 2010
Greetings!

Autumn is over the long leaves that love us,
And over the mice in the barley sheaves;
Yellow the leaves of the rowan above us,
And yellow the wet wild-strawberry leaves.

This is the first week of winter for some northern cultures, and the first day of Christmas for the retail sector, not to mention Voting Day! The press about our Annual New Charterholder Dinner, held last week, was incredible, and the event itself was well attended and fun. We're looking forward to a full schedule of events this month, including educational events, new series', networking and social events, and board and committee meetings.

There is A LOT of information in this month's newsletter.  Please spend some time learning about our many upcoming events this month, and be sure to keep an eye on our Event Calendar as we are regularly adding new event information.

Make the most of your membership; get involved!

Best Regards,

Maren Amdal, Executive Director
