The Next Hundred Million: America in 2050.
Assuming that America will increase to 400 million people in the next 40 years, Kotkin divines demographic consequences in this catalog of predictions. Optimistic in contrast to elite opinions on the Left and the Right that see America in decline, Kotkin's views are not certitudes: the author regularly cautions that if certain things are not done, such as ensuring an economic environment of upward mobility, his vision of the future may not come to pass. Caveats dealt with, Kotkin essentially asks where the extra 100 million will live. Because some of them are already here-those born or who have immigrated since the early 1980s-Kotkin tends to extrapolate present trends. After a career-starting stint in the big city, family-raising aspirations send people to the suburbs and, increasingly in the Internet-connected world, to small towns and rural areas. Describing specific locales, Kotkin anticipates a revitalization of older suburbs and even a repopulation of the Great Plains. As sociological futurists engage with Kotkin's outlook, the opportunity for critics lies in the author's lesser attention to the environmental and political effects of population growth. --Gilbert Taylor, Booklist.

A note about event registration through our new website:
We are now taking advantage of the registration portal provided by CFA Institute. The new improved system includes attendance tracking, automatic application of CE credits, and an estimated savings for our society of more than $10,000 per year.
Using the system is simple. Each individual registrant must have a CFA Institute website log-in name and password. All that is required is first/last name and a valid email address. Unfortunately, at this time the new system does not allow guest registration in the same way our previous application allowed. Guests are welcome, but will need to have their own user name and password. As host, you are welcome to create this account for them. On-site registrations will be allowed as available, payable with check or by registering online on-site. |

Regulatory Reform: What It Means for the Investment Management Profession with David Tittsworth, Executive Director, Investment Advisor Association
Enactment of the Dodd-Frank regulatory reform law will bring potentially seismic changes to the legal and regulatory framework governing the financial services industry. Much of the debate now turns from Capitol Hill to the SEC where decisions will be made on issues ranging from the "harmonization" of broker-dealer and investment adviser regulation to whether FINRA should extend its oversight to the investment advisory profession. In addition, all investment advisers will have to comply with the SEC's new regulations overhauling Form ADV Part 2 early in 2011. David Tittsworth, Executive Director of the Investment Adviser Association in Washington, DC, will provide an insider's view of the regulatory reform debate and what it will mean for investment management firms.
Presented by:
David G. Tittsworth
Executive Director/Executive Vice President
Investment Adviser Association
David Tittsworth is a native of the State of Kansas. He received his B.A. degree from the University of Kansas in 1975 and his law degree from the University of Kansas School of Law in 1978.
Mr. Tittsworth served a significant portion of his professional career in the public sector, where he held positions in all three branches of government. He began his legal career as a research attorney for the Kansas Court of Appeals in 1978. Thereafter, he held various positions in state government, including his appointment as Chief Counsel of the Department of Transportation in 1983, where he supervised a staff of attorneys and advised the Department and Governor on a wide range of issues. In 1985, David joined the bond counsel firm of Gilmore & Bell in Kansas City, where he advised state and municipal officials on various financing issues.
Upon moving to Washington, D.C. in 1987, Mr. Tittsworth first served as Associate Staff on the House Budget Committee. He accepted a position as Senior Counsel to the House Subcommittee on Transportation, Trade, and Hazardous Materials in 1989. In 1991, he left Capitol Hill to become General Counsel and a partner with a government relations firm (now Chambers, Conlon & Hartwell), where he represented the Investment Adviser Association and other clients. In 1992, he returned to Capitol Hill to serve as Counsel of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce, a position he held until joining the IAA as Executive Director and Executive Vice President in October 1996.
Today he manages all of the Association's activities, including its involvement in a wide variety of legislative, regulatory, compliance, educational, and business issues that affect the investment advisory profession.

Volunteer Reception: Minneapolis Queen |
Thank you, Volunteers!
Recognizing the contributions of our more than 100 volunteers with this invitation-only Happy Hour Cruise
Monday, September 13th, 5:15pm
Over the past five years, our volunteer base has grown from a handful of dedicated board members to a veritable army of active committed volunteers working on a wide variety of projects and initiatives. This work has been recognized internationally by CFA Institute the past two years, as we were recognized in both 2009 and 2010 for Excellence in Strategic Planning. Among other elements, the panel of award judges noted that we "work our plan". We would not be able to continually reach this success without your hard work!
We want to thank you for all you've done to make our society great! All current volunteers are welcome to join us for this fun Happy Hour Cruise. There will be plenty of time for networking and socializing, and you'll have a chance to meet and mingle with our recently expanded Board of Directors. Our newly adopted Annual Plan will be unveiled mid-cruise with a very brief presentation, and you'll have the opportunity throughout the evening to speak with current and past committee chairs and staff about upcoming initiatives and ways to get involved with Society projects.
This free event is by invitation only.
If you received an invitation to this event and have not yet registered, please do so immediately or contact the CFAMN office at 612-317-2887. If you did not receive an invitation and believe you should have, please call the Maren Amdal directly at 612-317-2888. |

| 08/19/10 - Annual Member Meeting: | |
Annual Member Meeting
Board Meeting | Happy Hour | Twins Game Our August Annual Meeting was open to all Members. The business portion of the meeting was brief, mainly introducing new board members and sharing the annual plan for this new fiscal year. We adjourned to Lyons Pub for some pre-game networking and then walked to the stadium to see the Twins play the Chicago White Sox. While the game wasn't the Twins best, it was definitely fun for all who attended, with Fireworks and Diversity Festivities at the start of the game to set the tone. We are happy to say we love the Twins even when they lose and we love it when the rain stays at bay until after the game. |
