The Wall Street Professional's Survival Guide:Success Secrets of a Career Coach

Wall Street Professionals Survival GuideThis is the only complete, up-to-date and practical guide for financial industry professionals seeking new or better jobs in today's brutally competitive environment - where fewer opportunities exist and the marketplace is flooded with out-of-work candidates. Authored by Roy Cohen - who spent 14 years as Goldman Sachs' sole "in-house" career and outplacement counselor - this book delivers industry-specific insider insights not found anywhere else. Drawing on his unsurpassed experience helping financial industry executives succeed in their job searches, Cohen tells readers what to do when and if they are fired or are seeking new employment opportunities: how to develop a "game plan" and job search targets, how to build your "story," how to position a move from sell-side to buy-side, and more. He offers finance-focused guidance on interview strategy, resumes, follow-up, references, and even negotiation, with examples from his practice. The career advice delivered in this book will be indispensable for readers who want to successfully navigate the forces that are transforming the finance industry and prosper in it.

Registering for Events
A note about event registration through our new website:
We are now taking advantage of the registration portal provided by CFA Institute.  The new improved system includes attendance tracking, automatic application of CE credits, and an estimated savings for our society of more than $10,000 per year.

Using the system is simple.  Each individual registrant must have a CFA Institute website log-in name and password.  All that is required is first/last name and a valid email address.  Unfortunately, at this time the new system does not allow guest registration in the same way our previous application allowed.  Guests are welcome, but will need to have their own user name and password.  As host, you are welcome to create this account for them.  On-site registrations will be allowed as available, payable with check or by registering online on-site.

Making a Good Résumé Great!
from San Francisco-based résumé expert Jared Redick
LogoTo better highlight our upcoming Professional & Career Development Day on April 8th, 2010, this month's Monthy Member Missive features custom content from one of the nationally-known break-out session speakers we will feature at the conference.  To feature your firm another month, please contact Maren Amdal.

Google "résumé writing tips" and you'll get a glut of advice about optimizing your résumé. Power words, catchy design, bullet points, and so on. Problem is, by mid-career you need a lot more than that if you want to shape your own professional direction.

I use a "purpose, content, design" approach in my résumé writing practice. Purpose is most important, content plays second chair to purpose, and design serves the needs of both.

Before sitting down to reshape your résumé, consider doing this:

1.     Step away from the résumé. Expressing yourself through restricted formatting is obviously what you're about to do. But the recall and creativity required for a great résumé should not be restricted. Step away and ask yourself, "Who am I today? Where do I want to go? How does my experience align with what my audience needs?" Once defined, be sure those points are clear at every step. You'll have a better shot at marketing yourself on paper. (A freshly written document is much more effective than appending to the one you began at age 22.)

2.     Differentiate your background. Do you manage 10 employees or 50? Is your budget $20M or $100M? Where does your firm stack up against others in terms of ranking and size? Your candidacy will be weighted on these points, so position yourself for the next sensible step in your career by identifying and presenting size and scope. (Only if it's public information, p.s.) Frame your work and the work you want to do with the mindset that you're looking for a professional fit. (This exercise might also help settle internal questions about direction and fit.)

Only then can you sit down with the clarity needed to fully take advantage of all those Google tips.

Unlike their parents, who quietly marched down to their Social Security office as soon as they turned 65, baby boomers want to know how they can maximize lifetime benefits through effective Social Security planning. Advisors who take the time to understand the rules and recommend innovative strategies will be in great demand among boomers, who see Social Security as the starting point for comprehensive retirement income planning that includes IRA rollovers, investment management, insurance products, and financial planning services

Volunteer Book Drive:
Help support the Northside Achievement Zone!
From Member Jessica Murray, CFA:

I love books, so this week I was excited to hear of something easy we booklovers can do. I'm participating in a book drive to collect new and gently used books for North Minneapolis kids. It's part of the PEACE Foundations's really ambitious Northside Achievement Zone, modeled on the successful Harlem Children Zone which has proven it can help close the achievement gap (60 Minutes has profiled the Harlem Children Zone several times). NAZ plans to help every child - from birth to age 18 - in a small, 18-block section of North Minneapolis. Right now, half of all high schoolers in that North Minneapolis zone drop out. Minnesota has the second worst "achievement gap" - the chasm between test scores of Caucasian and African American kids - in the country; Worse than Alabama, Mississippi or New Orleans. The books we donate will be given out to families, stocked in the Northside McDonald's and in the local nail salons for families to pick-up and read.

Can you donate some new or used kids' books? I'll be happy to accept books at the St Patrick's Day social at Lyon's Pub, or if you want, you can drop them off at the CFA Society of Minnesota's office on the 13th floor of Rand Tower by Friday April 2nd.

Jessica MurrayBig problems like the achievement gap sometimes seem insurmountable, but this is something easy we can do. Books matter, and we can help by donating. Please let me know if you can help with some books, and please forward this to any else you think as books to share.  I can be reached at jdukin@yahoo.com.
