A Splendid Exchange: How trade shaped the world

09 New Charterholders
Adam Smith wrote that man has an intrinsic "propensity to truck, barter, and exchange one thing for another." But how did trade evolve to the point where we don't think twice about biting into an apple from the other side of the world? In this sweeping narrative history of world trade, William J. Bernstein tells the extraordinary story of global commerce from its prehistoric origins to the myriad controversies surrounding it today. He transports readers from ancient sailing ships that brought the silk trade from China to Rome in the second century to the rise and fall of the Portuguese monopoly in spices in the sixteenth; from the American trade battles of the early twentieth century to the modern era of televisions from Taiwan, lettuce from Mexico, and T-shirts from China. Lively, authoritative, and astonishing in scope, A Splendid Exchange is a riveting narrative that views trade and globalization not in political terms, but rather as an evolutionary process as old as war and religion-a historical constant-that will continue to foster the growth of intellectual capital, shrink the world, and propel the trajectory of the human species.

Registering for Events
A note about event registration through our new website:
We are now taking advantage of the registration portal provided by CFA Institute.  The new improved system includes attendance tracking, automatic application of CE credits, and an estimated savings for our society of more than $10,000 per year.

Using the system is simple.  Each individual registrant must have a CFA Institute website log-in name and password.  All that is required is first/last name and a valid email address.  Unfortunately, at this time the new system does not allow guest registration in the same way our previous application allowed.  Guests are welcome, but will need to have their own user name and password.  As host, you are welcome to create this account for them.  On-site registrations will be allowed as available, payable with check or by registering online on-site.

The Continuing Evolution of Hedge Fund Investing
with Texas Hemmaplardh, Slocum

Hedge funds are neither easy to define nor use in portfolios partly because the industry has been in a constant state of fast evolution, which is still ongoing.  Recently, hedge fund managers have been adapting to extreme market volatility and uncertain regulatory regimes, while hedge fund investors have been using new tools to attempt to balance the myriad risks and rewards of using hedge funds in portfolios.  Texas will discuss the state of the hedge fund market from an investors perspective and the ways that investors and managers might adapt to the next stage of hedge funds' continuing evolution.

Brief Biography:

Texas Hemmaplardh, CFA
Director, Capital Markets Research, Slocum & Assc.
Texas Hemmaplardh joined Slocum in 1997.  He has expertise in capital markets research and portfolio construction across multiple asset classes, particularly the integration of alternative investments into diversified portfolios.  Prior to joining Slocum, Texas was Finance Director for GlobaLearn, which was among the first not-for-profit internet-based educational content providers to public schools.  Texas holds a BA in Economics from Yale University.
