Consultant expenses are something that our clients are certainly paying attention to, and we are as well. I want to share a short example of good expense management that demonstrates the value of commitment from the front line people in any organization.

Alliance currently has four consultants on a client site that has a "season" during which hotels and cars have big rate increases. Our consultants work a three-week rotation on site, and then work the fourth week remotely. The team devised a strategy to decrease the cost of renting cars while still ensuring that everyone had a car. They saved our client about $1300 this month by arranging their monthly rentals in rotation so that we obtained the lower monthly rate, but by adding a second driver to each rental we were able to utilize three cars for four people by having the second driver use the car while the first is rotating home.

Also, by picking up the car anywhere but the airport we avoid concession fees and special airport recovery charges and taxes. This can amount to over $25 per day in many markets. A good tip when renting for longer periods. And we found that consultants on monthly rentals could get the rental company to take them to the airport from the downtown rental location and pick them up when returning.

This is an example of partnering with our clients in a proactive way. It demonstrates that our consultants make the connection between the overall success of our clients and our success.

  Meet Our Staff: Jianhe Liao
 Featured Consultant: Jianhe Liao, Lead Solution Architect
Jianhe has nine years of telecom experience, specializing in OSS/BSS and business process design.

TT: How did you get into telecom?
JL: I joined the Professional Services Group of a leading Enterprise Application Integration (EAI) vendor back in 2000. Since the company dominated the telecom EAI market, I got the chance to work in and then lead enterprise OSS/BSS projects one after another. After I left the EAI vendor I worked for a Business Process Management (BPM) vendor and created the Telecom BPM framework.
TT: What is your subject matter expertise?
JL: I have worked in almost all aspects of telecom from frontend to backend, such as POS, Customer Care, Billing, Number Management, Mediation, Provisioning, Fulfillment, etc. As an Architect with strong EAI and BPM background, I always search for solutions for my project from the enterprise business process point of view. My strongest attribute is the capability to find innovative and scalable solutions that optimize the business processes for my client.

TT: What do you feel is the biggest contribution you've made to a client?
JL : In 2006, I was engaged on a project which was initially only scoped to expand an interface of the POS system for a leading telecom customer. Once I drilled down the requirement and the order management process, I noticed that the contract approval activities for orders were processed manually through emails. I took the initiative to define the process and designed a way to manage it. The launch of the application reduced the average contract approval time from 10 days to 3 days. It translated into huge revenue increase by retaining customers who would otherwise have been too impatient to wait for service.

TT:  What is one of the most interesting projects you've worked on?
JL: All projects I've worked on are very interesting. One of the most interesting projects I have worked on is the OSS project for AT&T Wireless. Over the course of this two years project I had the opportunity to work with all divisions of AT&T Wireless and worked on every phase of the lifecycle of the order. The launch of the project reduced the churn rate by 60% in the first year.

TT: What is your favorite city/country to work in?
JL: In last ten years, I've been blessed to have the great opportunity of working in many cities in North America. Since each city has its own climate, history and culture, it is very difficult to pick a favorite place to work. I enjoy working with people who have a different background. It helps me see the world from different angle. But if I am forced to make a pick, the favorite city is always the place where my family settles.

TT: What do you like best about working with Alliance? 
JL: Alliance has deep domain knowledge in telecom industry. Any help for me is only one call or one email away. This enables me to provide the best service to my clients. Also, the Alliance management team is the most open and friendly consulting management team I have ever worked with.

TT: What hobbies do you enjoy in your free time?
JL: In my spare time, I enjoy music, reading and sports. I like to visit new places, try food from different countries and learn about other cultures with my family.
