November 2010 GET INSPIRED. GET CREATIVE. GET TO WORK! |
Dear Starting Artists Family,
We are having a blast this fall in the Afterschool Program, bringing the media arts to a whole new group of starting artists! This week, we're learning about film & editing by creating our own short social justice films. In a few weeks, we'll be able to share our works with you!
In November, SA will be CLOSED: * Thursday, November 11 for Veterans Day * Monday, November 22 - Friday, November 26 for Thanksgiving week
Remember: you can always check our schedule online at the SA Calendar!

Starting Artists is looking for a new home
After three wonderful years, we are sad to announce that we will not be renewing the lease on our 211 Smith Street storefront. We have loved being part of the Cobble Hill community and meeting so many of our neighbors!
Starting Artists is currently in the search for a new home so that we can continue to serve our talented and deserving constituents, seeking a donated space ideally located in:
*Cobble Hill *Carroll Gardens *Clinton Hill *Boerum Hill *Brooklyn Heights *Downtown Brooklyn *DUMBO *Fort Greene *Gowanus *Park Slope *Prospect Heights *Red Hook
Please send an email to newhome@startingartists.org if you have any leads or can assist us in any way with our search.
Though good-byes are always difficult, we're excited about the future of Starting Artists and look forward to the next phase of our development!

Join us: Community Meeting about SA's future
As you can see, we have several big changes on the horizon for Starting Artists, and we want to hear from you, our community. Questions? Ideas? Concerns? Please bring them to us!
In that spirit, we will be hosting a Community Meeting on Monday, November 22 from 5:30pm - 7:30pm to talk about our search for a new home and what comes next. All parents & community members welcome!

The SA Times Sq Viewing Party was a success!
Thank you to everyone who came out to support SA on October 30th in Times Square for our WHY ARTS MATTER viewing party! We had a blast celebrating our Grand Prize victory with students, parents, and friends and watching our video on the big screen. We're so proud of all the artists who were involved in the project and proud to share our work with the world!
Just in case you missed it - SA's submission won the Grand Prize in the WHY ARTS MATTER Video Contest sponsored by Americans for the Arts. For the Grand Prize, a 30-second clip of our movie was shown 4 times every hour from October 25 - 31 and our students received a Flip UltraHD camera to continue making art. See the original, prize-winning video as well as the 30-second clip in Times Square here!

The Cobble Hill Blog, presented by The Brooklyn Bugle, covers local news and happenings, and writer Julie Kanfer stopped by to interview SA participants and staff and learn about our programs.
