Happy 4th of July!
Just a quick note to say we hope you and your
loved ones have a great, safe, and happy meaningful 4th of July.
Only the United States celebrate July 4th. However, many other countries celebrate their own individual Independence Day. For example, Afghanistan celebrates their Independence Day August 19, to commemorate the Treaty of Rawalpindi in 1919. The treaty granted independence from Britain.
The modern world has become greatly Americanized in that American culture has crept into many countries and modified tradition. If you walk down the streets of Japan, you will undoubtedly find a Japanese teenager with an Apple IPod. With this invasion of American culture comes the celebration of many American pastimes, as well. Many different countries and locales around the world celebrate July 4th in honor of the American holiday.
I can't help to think of the word "Courage" when I think of a country's Independence Day. I usually think of courage, not with words, but,
with images of a soldier in battle, someone who races into a burning building to rescue a child, or someone who has the spirit to face cancer with confidence
and a smile. There are examples of
courage all around us. For most of us in
developed countries, stories of heroism are very much a part of our heritage. But, what about the man or woman who has trouble putting one foot in front of the other one?
"Courage does not always roar.
Sometimes courage is that quiet voice at the end of the day that says...I will
try again tomorrow." -Mary Anne Radmacher
Mary Anne's message is, "It's not
what happens, but how we react to what happens, that matters most."
We, in America, celebrate our independence one day a year. We celebrate in big, loud, patriotic ways. And, we should! This year, on the 4th of July, whether you have picnics, hotdogs,
parades, and grand firework displays, let's not forget those less fortunate who silently have the courage to put one foot in front of the other despite their veiled prison or fear of persecution. I
hope you -- and those you are celebrating with -- will take a moment to
remember the sacrifices our troops are making. They put their lives on
the line to protect and defend our country and others, like Afghanistan. And that is something worth
celebrating, and something worth remembering.
