Volunteer Opportunities
Volunteers are the backbone of the Women of Hope
Project. If you are in the Hampton Roads
area and would like the opportunity to help support the Women of Hope Project,
please e-mail Lynn Francois or call her at 721-2009.
We have all ranges of support needs and will be glad to talk
to you about them. We do local sales of products and are looking for people who
would like to help create fundraising opportunities to support WOHP.
As the year winds up, we would also like to thank all the
volunteers who have helped through this year.
Every year is a unique year for the WOHP and with the continued support
of its volunteers, countless women's lives in Afghanistan have been improved. Thank you for all you do.

Dear Friends of the Women of Hope Project,
In spite
of the need for increased security, WOHP continues to serve the people
of Afghanistan in times when they need it the most...during the cold
winter season. Fighting in the Provinces forces families to flee with
nothing but what they can carry in their hands. Most of these families
will be living in tents in the snow this year and WOHP will be
providing them with food, warm clothing, blankets, wood to burn and hot
water bottles to keep them warm when they sleep at night. WOHP has
worked hard to establish long-term relationships of trust with local
families and village leaders who have been displaced. These
communities know that we are there to help them and provide the
necessary security that allows us to move freely in and among them.
The security of our local staff is always at the forefront of our minds
and we ask for your prayers so that they will continue to be able to
serve the people of Afghanistan in safety.

Making the Desert Bloom in Ben-e-Warsak
This
past summer , WOHP provided 700 fruit trees to be divided among the households of the Ben-e-Warsak community. Programs like the tree planting are designed towards the WOHP goal of helping to create a sustainable community. Growing trees is no easy task due to the lack of water and the dry, harsh conditions. However when Liz Witkowski, owner of New Century Inc. and Rich Earth ™ Products, saw this need she made a very generous donation of Rich Earth™ soil conditioner which is a 100% natural mineral soil conditioner that can dramatically improves the health of plants and the nutrient content of fruits and vegetables. She also coordinated the shipment of donated mushroom compost from Willoghby Garden Center and worm castings from Lone Pine Organics. Thanks also to Kevin Kennedy, Jim Snider and Jan Bradley in coordinating what was needed to get this product shipped. We are sure to see the results next summer!

Hot water bottles for the winter
When Cherry
Kruetzer learned from her husband, who was stationed
in Afghanistan , that hundreds of young children in the Afghan refugee camps
die every year from the harsh winter weather it broke her heart, and she knew
she had to do something. So she began a campaign to raise money to buy hot
water bottles that could help keep these little ones warm at night. What
started out with a few emails to friends and family quickly grew to include
three different schools, various churches, Cherry's son's Boy Scout Troop 97,
as well as concerned volunteers in several other countries! Realizing how much
power there is in children helping other children, these kids quickly took the
lead in this fundraising effort, and raised money from bake sales, car washes,
a penny drive, and just asking people for donations. The end result??? 450 hot
water bottles were ordered and shipped to Afghanistan to be distributed to the
children in various refugee camps. The children receiving the gifts, as well as
the children who made it all possible, will never forget the kindness and
generosity and love that was shared. Thanks to all of them for making a
difference in so many lives!
