National Gallery of Art
This summer The National Gallery of Art in
Washington, D.C. in cooperation with National Geographic hosted a traveling
exhibit entitled Afghanistan: Hidden Treasures from the National Museum.
It featured artifacts discovered in the summer of 2003
inside boxes hidden
wi
thin the presidential bank vault in Kabul. They were taken from the
National museum and hidden there by museum workers, saving them from the
destruction of war. Women of Hope Project had the good fortune to display
and sell dolls made by our embroidery project participants in the National
Gallery gift shop during this wonderful exhibition. All of the dolls were
sold within two weeks of arriving at the Gallery! For more information about the exhibit and to find
out where it is traveling next, please visit Afghanistan treasures.

Dear Friends of the Women of Hope Project,
Greetings
from Afghanistan! It is hard to believe
that we have been in Afghanistan for six years!
When I look back on all that has happened in this country I am in awe of
the progress and yet, saddened by the deteriorating security situation we now
face. Yet, with and through the faithful
help of our supporters, Women of Hope Project continues to strive to be a light
in the darkness.
When you see the news reports coming out of
Afghanistan, it is easy to become discouraged and to think that all our efforts
are hopeless. However, many positive
things have happened in the last six years.
Signs of progress are all around us.
Girls are going to school. Women are working. Hospitals are operating. Music blares from
small shops and children are flying kites again.
In spite of all of this progress, there is
growing discontent. The women and
families we work with are all extremely concerned about the very real
possibility of the Taliban returning to power.
The saddest thing is that I hear, time and time again, is many men saying
they wish the Taliban would come back!
They are so desperate for security and safety; they choose to forget the
brutality they endured during the Taliban rule.
They only want to live in peace.
Your prayers are needed now, more than ever, for this country and the
precious people we serve. WOHP is a
small fish in a big sea; however, we believe that through the work we are
doing, with your help and support, we are making a difference. |

Embroidery and Design
Project
The Embroidery Project is growing by leaps and bounds! More and more women
are coming to our Vocational Center in hopes of finding a way to use
their skills to support their families.
This
June, with the generous support of Operation Blessing International, we were
able to move into a larger Center which is now open with a beautiful showroom, featuring
all of the products our ladies are producing.
WOHP has trained 100 women, who train other women, thereby forming their
own networks. These networks of women are bringing brighter futures to over 1000 women and their families.
We are proud to say that, to date, ALL
of the children of our ladies in this project are going to school! That
is
because you have supported them by purchasing their beautiful
embroidered
products, and the ladies are now able to support their families,
thereby freeing
the children to go to school.

WOHP now supports two schools!
Last Fall, WOHP started a tent school for
200 children at Ben-e-Warsak, a repatriation community near Bagram AFB in the
Parwan District of Kabul. WOHP has obtained favor with the Afghan Ministry of
Education who is now providing support to rent one of the vacant houses in this
community to house the school until a proper school can be built. WOHP provides the salaries for two teachers,
the furnishings, teachers aids and school supplies. This
Spring, WOHP started another tent school for 65 children living in a refugee
camp here in Kabul. These families are
Kuchis, a nomadic tribe who for centuries have supported themselves as
shepherds to sheep, goats and camels.
During the recent wars, this particular clan lost all of their animals
due to disease, drought and land mines. They are now living in squalid
conditions and eke a meager living caring for a few animals belonging to
others. When we first visited this camp to see how we could help, the first
thing the elders told us was that they wanted a school for their children. They told us that they would find the teacher
if we could provide the resources! WOHP went to work right away to provide the
tents, school supplies and carpets for the dirt floors and supports the
teacher's monthly salary.

Thank you!
What a blessing to have to say
that there are too many to mention individually, but WOHP wishes to take this
opportunity to thank ALL of the
churches, organizations and individuals who have shared your love, financial
support and donations of good. All of you are part of the Women of
Hope Project. Without the help of God,
who enables us to do the work and who inspires each of you to give, our work
would not be possible. We thank you and
the people we serve thank you!
We also continue to be blessed by a wonderful relationship with our
Military. We thank them for all of their support both in Afganistan
and at home. |

How You Can Help
None
of the work we do is possible without your faithful support! We ask you
to search your heart and prayerfully consider providing monthly financial
support to make these goals a reality. We hope to
bring peace to this war-ravaged country by putting the men back to work, by
creating a peaceful environment for the women as we work with the families to
demonstrate respect, kindness and love.
To do this, we need your financial support. We are seeking core funding
which will enable us to hire more staff and increase our capacity to accomplish
all that the Lord has given us to do. Through the sales of from our
Embroidery Project, WOHP has been able to accomplish all that we have mentioned
above, but the current security situation is a serious threat to that source of
income. We can no longer depend on our sales at the military bases here
to support our efforts and need your help to continue our work.
Will
you consider partnering with WOHP in our efforts restore peace to Afghanistan,
one family at a time? We believe the prayer of the Afghan people is
"Give us, Lord, our daily bread and forgive those who give us guns
instead." Putting people to work, having food to feed their families,
having the ability to send their children to school and having peace in their
land; that is the desire of the Afghan people and what will help to restore
peace to this land. You can be an agent of change by partnering with
WOHP with your financial support as we continue to work hard to help these
families realize this dream.
