"The exiles from Jerusalem who are in Sepharad will possess the towns of the Negev." (Obadiah 20)

Our Blood's Crying Out!

Hispanics For the last few years I have been saying that no less than 10 to 15 percent of all Hispanic/Latinos have Sephardic Jewish roots. I'm referring to the multitudes of our people that are Jewish descendants of Spanish and Portuguese ancestors. While 10-15% doesn't sound like a large percentage, the numbers will boggle your brain when you discover that there are over 44 million Latinos in the USA. This does not count the undocumented workers in America. So take 15% of 44 million and you come up with over 6 million Latinos who have Jewish roots and the majority don't even realize it.

We have been connected to a large and reputable DNA lab in Houston, Texas for the last five years or so. Due to more folks wanting to discover their true ancestry, more and more Latinos have taken a DNA test.

Now, I'm not a molecular or DNA scientist although the people that operate the lab are. Frankly, I was having some difficulty sorting through what's called DNA haplotypes. In my layman terms, a haplotype speaks of the formula which identifies who and where your ancestors are from and tries to connect you with cousins you might not even know you had.

Meantime, last month, the American Journal of Human Genetics came out with an article that declared that 20% of all Spanish and Portuguese men have what I call a "classical" Sephardic Jewish haplotype. In other words, one 1 of every 5 Iberian men is of Sephardic Jewish origin. The combined population between Spain and Portugal is 50 million. This means that more than 10 million Spaniards and Portuguese are descendants of Jews.

"But they're up in Spain not down here," you say. The point I'm trying to make is more in the blood rather than the numbers. Let me try to make it simple for those of us without a hard scientific brain. Here's what I've discovered.

I have found that the same DNA pattern that exists in Iberia (Spain and Portugal) is the same pattern I'm discovering among Hispanic/Latinos here in our United States. I wouldn't doubt that this pattern might also hold true, to some degree, in countries south of the border due to similar historical origins connected with Spain.

I have found two amazing things which I am integrating into my seminars on the history of our Sephardic Anusim people. First, I have found that we have some "classical" DNA haplotypes which directly and unequivocally point to Jewish ancestry. On top of this, I have found that a minority of these individuals that have taken a DNA test happen to be from a very long line that traces all the way back to Israel's first High Priest who was Aaron -- Moses' older brother. This line is known as cohen or cohanim. Parenthetically, I've also discovered that many of our test results point to a general Levite connection, some to a higher degree than others.

Therefore, what I'm saying is that we'll probably discover that close to 20% of all Latino/Hispanics may tend to have a cohen (high priestly) haplotype. But what about all the other Latino/Hispanics who's DNA do not point to this "classical" Sephardic haplotype? Here's where things get a bit crazy. Let me give you an example in order to explain my position.

Within the Jewish Dutch Community 42% have a particular DNA haplotype which is not what I've coined, a "classical" Jewish haplotype. However, there is an amazing phenomenon which proves my observation. Dutch men who did not have a Jewish origin have, for hundreds of years, married Jewish women. As such they integrated their wives' faith, customs and traditions. Many of their children were brought up in the Jewish faith throughout many generations. In short, they became what we know today as Dutch Jews.

Now here's where we get closer to home. The Jewish Dutch men I just referred to have the exact same DNA haplotype as 60% of Spanish men. In other words, a little over 2 out of every 5 Dutch men are Jews. On the other hand, among Spanish men, it's more like 3 out of every 5 that have the same haplotype as these Dutch Jews. There is no other country in the entire world that has more than 10% of this same haplotype; and half of them have a "weird" sign which points to Levant countries such as Turkey, Syria, Egypt, including Greece.

What am I saying? What I'm proposing here is that for hundreds of years, beginning in Iberia, Spanish men married Jewish women and also took on their customs, culture, traditions and faith. However, due to the Spanish and the Portuguese Inquisitions (holocausts) they went deeply underground and became what's referred to as "Crypto Jews" or Jews in secrecy or hiding. This is why an increasing number of Sephardic Hispanic/Latinos are emerging all over the place. They're reconnecting with and bringing to light oral customs and traditions which their forefathers' practiced for many centuries. (By the way, for many, many years, Jewish rabbis and Israeli authorities only recognized the Jewishness on the maternal line.)

This is why my title here is "Our blood's crying out," because our DNA is finally shouting to the fact that we're done with hiding our true identity and want to reconnect with our Jewish family and "our Israel."

Mordochai Arbel, a former diplomat from Israel to the nations and islands of the Caribbean told the study tour group I was leading that: "Vuestra sangre clama." This means, "Your blood is crying out!" Our blood's crying out for the true identification of our real history and not one that's been imposed on us for many centuries. Our blood's crying out to reconnect with the other side of our Jewish family from which we were severed by Inquisitions, anti-Semitic pogroms and persecutions that targeted our people.

Therefore, I admonish you to seriously rethink about the fact of who you really are and what is God's promise and mandate for your life in conjunction with Erez Israel. I urge you to not stop at the historical or theoretical but to press all the way into action. By action I'm referring to your dynamic role in regard to Am Israel which is the people of Israel, as well as Erez Israel which is the Land of Israel. Can you imagine what a positive impact our people can make in Israel as she faces enormous odds, then suddenly, out of oblivion, here comes an army of Sephardic Jewish descendants who'll stand together with our Jewish Israeli family to quell some of the conflict they've faced up there? What a rude awakening to Israel's enemies this shall be when our people finally wake up, take action and show up in the land of our forefathers. What an honor - what a responsibility - what a blessing!
