Fellows Graduation
Surgical Oncology Fellows 2010
Surgical
Oncology Fellows for 2009-2010 Academic Year.
The 2010 graduates from John Wayne Cancer Institute's Surgical Oncology Fellowship Program recently celebrated their onward and upward moving careers in June. We would like to take this time to congratulate them and wish them the best!
Our Surgical Oncology Fellowship Program, one of only 16 centers in the
country approved by the Society of Surgical Oncology (SSO), is led by
Donald L. Morton, M.D., Chief of the Melanoma Program, and Director of
the Surgical Oncology Fellowship Program. Dr. Morton is considered one
of the founders and major advocates of academic surgical oncology.
Fellows that graduate from the John Wayne Cancer Institute Surgical
Oncology Fellowship Program go on to become leading faculty members and
researchers at some of the most prestigious schools and health centers
around the world.
"The experience we get here at JWCI as Fellows is unparalleled in any program." says Richard J. Bleicher, M.D. who graduated in 2003. He went on to be the Co-Director of the Breast Fellowship Program at Fox Chase Cancer Center.
We at the John Wayne Cancer Institute sincerely appreciate the
partnership and unwavering support of all our donors. With your support,
the Institute and its faculty have provided the highest level of cancer
education to young surgeons focusing on oncology care and research. For
more information on the Surgical Oncology Fellowship Program, please
contact the Public Affairs and Development office at (310) 315-6111.

Research and News
William H. Parker, M.D., a JWCI adjunct faculty member, was quoted on United Press International.com in an article which suggests that elective removal of the ovaries may do more harm than good. Parker conducted an analysis of medical literature and said, "Given that 300,000 U.S. women a year undergo elective oophorectomy, the findings of increased long-term risks have important public health implications." The analysis is published in the Journal of Minimally Invasive Gynecology.

Summer Is Melanoma Awareness Time
Summertime also reminds us to pay close attention to our skin and
get annual check-ups for any suspicious spots or moles.
Donald Morton, M.D., Chief of the
Melanoma Program, is an accomplished surgical oncologist and a renowned
clinical scientist whose fundamental discoveries have profoundly changed
the treatment of cancer. His innovative studies of
sentinel node mapping changed the standard of care for patients with
early-stage malignant melanoma.
Mark Faries, M.D., Director of
Translational Tumor Immunology, joined John Wayne Cancer Institute's
faculty in July 2004 after completing JWCI's Surgical Oncology Training
Program. As Associate Director of Fellowship Education and head of the
laboratory of translational tumor immunology at JWCI, Dr. Faries is
continuing his studies of patient responses to immunotherapy and the
immunologic character of melanoma metastases.
