Volunteer Profile
Wendy Feldman The John Wayne Cancer Institute Auxiliary recently held
their 25th Anniversary Odyssey Ball Gala fundraiser in April. Many
people were involved in the production of the event and one volunteer in
particular was Wendy Feldman.
Wendy, the daughter of John Wayne Cancer Institute Auxiliary
Past President Diane Feldman, has been involved with the Institute and the
Auxiliary since she was little. Wendy grew up with her mother, Diane, doing
charity work. When Diane made John Wayne Cancer Institute a priority some 28
years ago with Sandy Cohen, Wendy also became involved.

Event Spotlight Avon Walk for Breast Cancer
Since 2003, the Avon Walk has provided millions of medically
under-insured women and men the chance to receive the screening, support
and treatment they need to fight back. Through 2009, Avon global
philanthropy in more than 50 countries worldwide have raised and awarded
more than $660 million. As one of Los Angeles' beneficiaries and
medical sponsors of the Avon Walk for Breast Cancer, we are honored to

Research and News
William H. Parker, M.D., was quoted on United Press International.com in an article which suggests that elective removal of the ovaries may do more harm than good. Parker conducted an analysis of medical literature and said, "Given that 300,000 U.S. women a year undergo elective oophorectomy, the findings of increased long-term risks have important public health implications." The analysis is published in the Journal of Minimally Invasive Gynecology.

Summer Is Melanoma Awareness Time
Summertime also reminds us to pay close attention to our skin and
get annual check-ups for any suspicious spots or moles.
Donald Morton, M.D., Chief of the
Melanoma Program, is an accomplished surgical oncologist and a renowned
clinical scientist whose fundamental discoveries have profoundly changed
the treatment of cancer. His innovative studies of
sentinel node mapping changed the standard of care for patients with
early-stage malignant melanoma.
Mark Faries, M.D., Director of
Translational Tumor Immunology, joined John Wayne Cancer Institute's
faculty in July 2004 after completing JWCI's Surgical Oncology Training
Program. As Associate Director of Fellowship Education and head of the
laboratory of translational tumor immunology at JWCI, Dr. Faries is
continuing his studies of patient responses to immunotherapy and the
immunologic character of melanoma metastases.
