Making a Major Difference
Lois Rosen
For Lois Rosen, what matters is making a difference. She has succeeded in doing just that through
her philanthropic work with John Wayne Cancer Institute. As an Institute Auxiliary Board Member (and
past president), Lois works to raise money for finding a cure. "We're all here for one purpose - to raise
money for cancer research," she notes.
"The women believe in what they do, and they're very supportive of each
other. We've got some very hard workers
in the Auxiliary."
Lois's dedication to fighting for a cure for
cancer stems from her experiences as a two-time breast cancer survivor. In appreciation of the attentive care she
received at the Institute, Lois has made significant contributions to support
breast cancer research and the Fellowship Program.

Prostate Health September Means Prostate Cancer Awareness
September means you can help the men in your life become aware of prostate cancer. Prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in men. An estimated 217,000 new cases will be diagnosed this year. To help prevent prostate cancer, men can start with a low fat diet with lots of fruits and vegetables.
There are no noticeable symptoms of prostate cancer while it is still in the early stages, which is why screening is so critical. There are many different treatment options for men with prostate
cancer. Treatment options for prostate cancer can be divided into two
main categories and most of the
time a successful prostate cancer treatment will use a combination of
local therapies and systematic therapies.
Almost 100% of men diagnosed with prostate cancer are still alive in 5 years. Over 90%
of prostate cancer cases are found while the cancer is still either
local or regional, and nearly 100% of these men are still alive 5 years
after being diagnosed.
Prostate cancer research is a priority for John Wayne Cancer Institute with several scientists pursuing research and studies. And thanks to the generous gift of $6.5 million from the Joseph B. Gould Foundation, the Dirks-Dougherty Prostate Center has been established at John Wayne Cancer Institute and Saint John's Health Center.
