Week of April 30, 2012

April may be recognized far and wide as Adopt a Greyhound Month, but at GALT, that is our focus for each and every month of the year! While we just celebrated our 11th anniversary of helping hounds find their perfect matches, GALT's commitment to make each and every month Adopt a Greyhound Month continues. Won't you join us in our dedication to the hounds?

There are so many ways that you can be a part of finding greyhounds the homes that they deserve - whether you have 1 minute or 1 hour to spare, $1 or $10 in loose change. Here's a brief list of opportunities to explore.

NutmegMy Christmas break began last December with a new addition to my "pack." A petite lemon brindle greyhound girl had just been rescued with 10 other greys from horrible conditions in a Wichita Falls trailor. I read the story on Facebook and then heard that GALT was driving up to get the dogs but when I saw the photo of the skeletal group, my heart melted. My eyes fell upon the yellow tiger sweetie and I quickly volunteered to foster her. Since we already had 3 other dogs at home (two greys and a standard poodle), it was going to get a bit more crowded in the Lorusso household but I couldn't say "no."

As one of the "Thank Heaven Eleven," Nutmeg came to live with us and spent the next four months battling a serious case of heartworm, then upper respiratory problems, worms and finally a spaying. Throughout her entire medical odyssey, she never stopped loving us or her pack mates which told me a LOT about her beautiful spirit. She ate like a champ for a month and voila... her ribs and spinal column disappeared! Her big brown eyes brightened, her energy picked up and whenever Donn looked for me, he'd find me with the Nut clamped to my side and her little pointy snout in my hand.

When she became "adoptable," I struggled with letting her go. I wanted to do the right "foster mom" thing but my heart sunk at the thought of her leaving and when I began receiving inquiries from future adopters, I knew it was a done deal. I am happy to say that I am officially a "failed foster mom!" Nutty is mine and I am hers. All is right in the Lorusso household.

Keeper, aka Keeper Fantastic, is a gorgeous 2-year-old black male with white accents born November 5, 2009. Keeper's sire is TK Quick Strike and his dam is Cira's Lemon. Keeper has 24 races to his credit on, all at Gulf Greyhound Park in Texas. He started his career on October 22, 2011 and it ended abruptly on March 15, 2012 with a broken leg. Keeper was evaluated by Dr. Christy Soileau at Preston Park Animal Hospital and was scheduled for surgery with Dr. Radasch of the Dallas Veterinary Surgical Center. After consultation, it was clear that the best outcome for Keeper would come from amputating the leg due to the severity of the break. Keeper is now fully healed from his amputation, and is ready to hop right into your life!

Keeper's Cat Test: When this beautiful laid-back boy spotted the cat, he wasn't so laid-back anymore. There was some snapping action behind the muzzle. Now we know he is not destined to live with kitties!

Keeper is very loving, affectionate, and just wants to be wherever his people are. He will kiss your whole face if you let him, loves to be petted and loved, and is a very happy boy. He does not seem to be afraid of anything - it's almost like he's been in a home all his life. This handsome guy has so many adorable features that there are too many to list - from his Cookies & Cream chin, to his ears where one points forward while the other points back, he is one big bundle of cuteness and love! Keeper roaches on his back but is still working on his balance with only one back leg. His house manners are good, he loves his crate, walks well on the leash, and sleeps through the night.
