Greetings!

As GALT begins the New Year, we find ourselves inundated with heartworm positive greyhounds. At present, there are 11 hounds in GALT's care who are in some stage of treatment or are about to begin treatment, and 4 of these hounds were received within the past 5 days. And as unfortunate as the current situation is, we know that more are on their way to GALT in the upcoming weeks.

GALT needs your support now more than ever to continue to care for these hounds. Not only do they require expensive medication but they spend longer periods in foster homes as the recovery process is months long, and sometimes, repeat treatments are required. This puts a great strain on our foster home system that so lovingly provides the TLC that these special hounds require.

Please consider making a donation or becoming a foster today so that GALT can provide the care that they require and continue to live the GALT motto - "No Grey Turned Away."

As the American Heartworm Society tells us - "Preventing heartworm disease is easy. Treating it, sadly, is anything but."

For more information on heartworm prevention and treatment, please visit http://www.heartwormsociety.org

GREYT GALA TICKETS AVAILABLE - "FAITH, HOPE & CHARITY"

Gala12For over ten years, the Greyhound Adoption League of Texas (GALT) has been not only the organization of choice for retired greyhounds requiring adoption services, but also often the adoption organization of last resort for many injured, abused, and neglected Greyhounds.

Each year GALT unconditionally accepts numerous injured, abused and neglected Greyhounds from the animal shelters and the general public.  For some of these greyhounds, the journey to a forever home comes relatively quickly, Many others, however, require vast amounts of medical care to treat broken legs, heart worm infestation, tick borne blood diseases, the ravages of near starvation plus  time to heal.  GALT saw its annual operating budget increase from about $280,000 in our fiscal year 2009-2010 to nearly $400,000 in our last fiscal year 2010 -2011 due to increased medical and rehabilitation costs for these sick and injured greyhounds

For GALT to continue its mission and to pay the costs to provide proper medical care to heal and rehabilitate sick and  injured greyhounds, so they too can transition to a new life in a "forever home," takes your continue commitment to financially support GALT's good works.

You can do this by attending GALT's biggest fundraising event of the year, the 11th annual Greyt Gala Dinner and Auction, March 3, 2012,  at the HILTON DALLAS IN SOUTHLAKE TOWN SQUARE, 1400 Plaza Place, Southlake, TX 76092, with cocktails/wine from 6:00-7:00pm and a gourmet dinner service starting at 7:15 pm.   Ticket prices are $125 for a single ticket purchase and $100 per ticket when two or more are purchased at the same time. Purchase Tickets

Our theme this year is Faith, Hope, and Charity, in honor of three of the many abused injured Greyhounds cared for by GALT over the past several years; Faith, a female missing her right ear, was removed from a hoarder (along with her 8 puppies); Hope, a stray discovered cowering under a house near a busy highway on a freezing morning after suffering for months in the open without adequate food; and, Charity, another stray severely underweight at only 45 pounds due to starvation.

As always, the event will feature besides good food and drink, a cadre of local celebrities and retired professional athletes who support GALT's mission of "No Grey Turned Away" along with numerous and exciting "must have" live and silent auction items. John Rhadigan, Fox Sports News, will again be emceeing this event.

The revenue from your ticket and auction purchases will provide the funds needed for GALT to continue to provide care and substance for the injured, sick, abused and neglected greyhoundsYour FAITH in GALT, your never-ending HOPE that every Greyhound has a loving home, and your CHARITY at this event will make that possible.

BACK TO SCHOOL - DOG OBEDIENCE CLASSES

The holidays are over and it's time for the kids to go back to school! While the two-leggers are off learning math and science, the four-leggers can learn obedience and house manners thanks to trainer Mary Waugh Swindell and Woofgang Doggy Daycare in Carrollton.

January 25 - February 29 All classes are 6 weeks in duration, cost $125 per dog, and are limited to 8 dogs per class. Please pre-register to hold your space.

Dolce school6:30-7:30pm Beginner Obedience
This class is designed for dogs who have not had much formal obedience training. Also appropriate are dogs who have learned some basic skills in puppy kindergarten, but who need polish and review to be more reliable in a group setting. Topics covered include: no jumping, loose leash walking, attention skills, sit, down, stay, come, leave it and matwork (teaching your dog to lay down on a mat), Treats and toys will be used to reward dogs as well as petting and love.

7:45-8:45pm Greyhound 101
Bring out the hounds! This special class for our retired racers will help them transition into their new "careers" as pets and fast friends. This class will help you to understand how your hound thinks, how to communicate with them, and how to encourage good manners. Topics will include: sit, down, leave it, no jumping, food stealing, crate training/separation anxiety and more!

8:45-9:45pm Control Unleashed Class
We are pleased to offer this popular class in Carrollton! This class is for dogs who need to learn more self control. Typical candidates need to learn to restrain their enthusiasm around other people and other dogs, including those who are either overly distracted or overly stimulated by sights, smells, and running dogs. While this is an immensely popular class for agility dogs who have trouble focusing around other dogs running and playing, it's also appropriate for dogs who need to learn more focus and self control at home, when guests come over, or out on walks. Based on the book by Leslie McDevvit, this class will also work on relaxation protocols by Karen Overall and other influences.

HAPPY HOUNDS, HAPPY HOMES - Tizer

Tizer, aka Turbo B Tiger and nka Turbo, was adopted the week before Christmas in Plano. He made the long drive back with his forever family to their home on the shores of Deep Creek Lake in the mountains of western Maryland, which he happily shares with a small orange cat and a large Irish Wolfhound. Here he is adapting to the cold winter climate with his new best friend Teagan.

FEATURED GREYHOUND

image of Dolly

Dolly, aka Dar's Satin Doll, is a beautiful, 9-year-old fawn female born July 16, 2002. Her sire is Fortress Blue, making her grand sire the late, famous, Irish-bred Fortress, and her dam is Ion Double Talk. Dolly spent al her time in Florida racing, starting September 10, 2004, at Naples-Ft. Myers and ending October 1, 2005. GALT was contacted by a close friend of Dolly's owner and asked to take her into our program. Dolly was in a home for four years, but has returned to GALT due to family relocation.

Dolly's Cat Test:
Dolly was way too interested in the cat, and the cat was not pleased to meet her. A muzzle was a good thing. Therefore, Dolly should not be considered cat tolerant. We will introduce her to small dogs at a later time.

Dolly had walked into my home as if she had lived there for years. There was not growling at the other dogs; no tucked tail; no anxiety. Just a calm entrance, as if to say, I'm here! Dolly is most definitely a velcro dog, and likes everybody that she's met. She'll come up for petting, but not in any pushy way. her coat is thick like a chinchilla's coat, but it's not fur that she's blowing, it's just velvety soft! Dolly is EXTREMELY food motivated - it didn't take her long to realize that when I'm in the food room (kitchen) good things often come her way. She will nose her way into the crowd at the baby gate to accept her treats. She's a little pushy, trying to take other dogs' treats, but she responds well to a soft "no, wait your turn". I didn't know that Dolly liked bones until I realized that she had collected all the bones in the living room and was lying on them all! She looked like she was trying to hatch some huge bone creature. When Dolly is done eating in her crate, she will sometimes bark at other dogs if we all come into the sunroom to release the hounds. It's funny, she doesn't bark at the Borzoi girl who's loose in the room, only at the interlopers - I wonder if she thinks they're coming to eat all the food and there will be none left for her. It's not an aggressive bark either - more like an announcement? Hard to describe, but she quiets when I show up.

INCOMING DOGS

Dash
Dash, aka Git On Dasher, is a 7-year-old fawn male born December 20, 2004. His sire is Nita's Jesse and his dam is EZ Dixie Redhead. Dash has no races to his credit on Greyhound-data.com, and was surrendered to a shelter. Dash must have quite a story to tell of his whereabouts these past years! GALT received 5 of his littermates from the closing of Valley Race Park in 2007. All were adopted out - Prancer, Dancer, Vixen, Cupid and Banjo and having Dash now in the GALT family as if it were meant to be.

Cupcake, Stetson, Onyx and Blade have come to GALT together as they were turned in to the same shelter as an owner surrender. Cupcake is a 7-year-old black female, Stetson a 7-year-old brindle male, Onyx a small 7 1/2-year-old black female, and Blade a 7 1/2-year-old black male. Sadly, all have tested heartworm positive and are carrying a heavy load of intestinal parasites. They all began treatment this week. and results from a tick panel performed by Protatek are pending.

GREYS IN BOARDING

The dogs at BARK! and Top Paw Resort are ready to go to foster homes.  Please consider giving one of these wonderful greys a foster home and help reduce GALT's boarding fees.  If you are available to foster, even for a short time, contact Jennifer at jennifer@vilches.org.
