Greetings!

There's something about a new year that's so invigorating - the idea of a clean slate and the aspect of an entire year ahead. Luckily, this brings a lot of positive energy with it and a new resolve to get busy!

GALT is no exception to this dynamic. We are busy placing lucky greyhounds into their forever homes, and new hounds are coming into GALT. GALT volunteers are already hosting Meet the Greyhounds events each and every weekend. Our fundraisers and event organizers are reviewing the calendar and making plans to bring fun and involvement opportunities to GALT supporters.

With the passage of time, also, inevitably, comes change; therefore, GALT has a few changes to announce.

  • Sara Ramadan, GALT President, has resigned her positions to focus her energies in other areas. Sara leaves a legacy of successful events and fundraisers. GALT sincerely thanks Sara for her hard work and dedication.
  • Fred Busche, GALT's very first adopter and a key player in short haul transportation for GALT greys, has accepted the role of President of GALT.
  • Shannon Forrest, GALT's Fundraising and Special Events Chairman, has agreed to add the role of Vice President to his responsibilities.
  • GALT's Foster Coordinator and Website Administrator, Jennifer Vilches, has joined GALT's Board of Directors.
  • Abbie Seidel and Lisa Winfield have been appointed to the Membership committee and will share in responsibilities in GALT's Membership Program.

2012 will undoubtedly bring other changes GALT's way. We have many plans, lots of dreams and much to accomplish. We need everyone's help and support to make this year GALT's best ever!

One easy way to show your support is to commit to the GALT greyhounds through a new or renewed membership for 2012. The funds go directly to care for the hounds in our program, and membership dues, like all other donations to GALT, are tax deductible. Please consider joining the GALT family today and help GALT put its best foot forward for a successful year. It's never too late to join GALT!

Also please plan to attend GALT's Greyt Gala, themed "Faith, Hope & Charity" to be held March 3, 2012, at the Dallas Hilton in Southlake Town Square. Tickets are $125 each or $100 for two, and you can purchase your tickets here

2012 is going to be a GREYT year! We look forward to sharing it with you!

Sincerely,

The Officers, Directors, and Committee Members of Greyhound Adoption League of Texas, Inc.

GALT has earned the Guidestar Exchange Seal, demonstrating its commitment to transparency.

GREYT GALA TICKETS AVAILABLE - "FAITH, HOPE & CHARITY"

Gala12For over ten years, the Greyhound Adoption League of Texas (GALT) has been not only the organization of choice for retired greyhounds requiring adoption services, but also often the adoption organization of last resort for many injured, abused, and neglected Greyhounds.

Each year GALT unconditionally accepts numerous injured, abused and neglected Greyhounds from the animal shelters and the general public.  For some of these greyhounds, the journey to a forever home comes relatively quickly, Many others, however, require vast amounts of medical care to treat broken legs, heart worm infestation, tick borne blood diseases, the ravages of near starvation plus  time to heal.  GALT saw its annual operating budget increase from about $280,000 in our fiscal year 2009-2010 to nearly $400,000 in our last fiscal year 2010 -2011 due to increased medical and rehabilitation costs for these sick and injured greyhounds

For GALT to continue its mission and to pay the costs to provide proper medical care to heal and rehabilitate sick and  injured greyhounds, so they too can transition to a new life in a "forever home," takes your continue commitment to financially support GALT's good works.

You can do this by attending GALT's biggest fundraising event of the year, the 11th annual Greyt Gala Dinner and Auction, March 3, 2012,  at the HILTON DALLAS IN SOUTHLAKE TOWN SQUARE, 1400 Plaza Place, Southlake, TX 76092, with cocktails/wine from 6:00-7:00pm and a gourmet dinner service starting at 7:15 pm.   Ticket prices are $125 for a single ticket purchase and $100 per ticket when two or more are purchased at the same time. Purchase Tickets

Our theme this year is Faith, Hope, and Charity, in honor of three of the many abused injured Greyhounds cared for by GALT over the past several years; Faith, a female missing her right ear, was removed from a hoarder (along with her 8 puppies); Hope, a stray discovered cowering under a house near a busy highway on a freezing morning after suffering for months in the open without adequate food; and, Charity, another stray severely underweight at only 45 pounds due to starvation.

As always, the event will feature besides good food and drink, a cadre of local celebrities and retired professional athletes who support GALT's mission of "No Grey Turned Away" along with numerous and exciting "must have" live and silent auction items.

The revenue from your ticket and auction purchases will provide the funds needed for GALT to continue to provide care and substance for the injured, sick, abused and neglected greyhoundsYour FAITH in GALT, your never-ending HOPE that every Greyhound has a loving home, and your CHARITY at this event will make that possible.

BACK TO SCHOOL - DOG OBEDIENCE CLASSES

The holidays are over and it's time for the kids to go back to school! While the two-leggers are off learning math and science, the four-leggers can learn obedience and house manners thanks to trainer Mary Waugh Swindell and Woofgang Doggy Daycare in Carrollton.

January 25 - February 29 All classes are 6 weeks in duration, cost $125 per dog, and are limited to 8 dogs per class. Please pre-register to hold your space.

Dolce school6:30-7:30pm Beginner Obedience
This class is designed for dogs who have not had much formal obedience training. Also appropriate are dogs who have learned some basic skills in puppy kindergarten, but who need polish and review to be more reliable in a group setting. Topics covered include: no jumping, loose leash walking, attention skills, sit, down, stay, come, leave it and matwork (teaching your dog to lay down on a mat), Treats and toys will be used to reward dogs as well as petting and love.

7:45-8:45pm Greyhound 101
Bring out the hounds! This special class for our retired racers will help them transition into their new "careers" as pets and fast friends. This class will help you to understand how your hound thinks, how to communicate with them, and how to encourage good manners. Topics will include: sit, down, leave it, no jumping, food stealing, crate training/separation anxiety and more!

8:45-9:45pm Control Unleashed Class
We are pleased to offer this popular class in Carrollton! This class is for dogs who need to learn more self control. Typical candidates need to learn to restrain their enthusiasm around other people and other dogs, including those who are either overly distracted or overly stimulated by sights, smells, and running dogs. While this is an immensely popular class for agility dogs who have trouble focusing around other dogs running and playing, it's also appropriate for dogs who need to learn more focus and self control at home, when guests come over, or out on walks. Based on the book by Leslie McDevvit, this class will also work on relaxation protocols by Karen Overall and other influences.

Buddy

HAPPY HOUNDS, HAPPY HOMES - Buddy

Buddy, fka Rambo, turned out to be one of the nicest dogs we ever had! What a joy he is! We call him Buddy so much it stuck. Rambo really did not fit such a sweet, gentle boy.

The day Dick picked him up, Buddy rode home with his head on Dick's shoulder. That evening when Dick sat on the couch Buddy cuddled up with his head in Dick's lap. They are the best buddies. Buddy will turn 6 in January. He is really healthy. We think Sissy is around 10 - no tattoos. They get along perfectly.

FEATURED GREYHOUND

brad6

Brad is a handsome brindle male, born April 21, 2003. His sire is TNT Star Wars, making his grand sire Fortress, and his dam is Bob's Trego. Brad's litter was registered with the NGA, but he was not individually named and registered. Brad was found as a stray and taken to the Paris, TX shelter. He is a smaller boy, and loves to be in the company of others. Brad was in a home for six years, but has been returned to GALT when he could not get along with his whippet brother. Brad is not cat or small dog tolerant, but gets along well with people and larger dogs.

"Single, male, shiny, dark brindle, snugglebug greyhound seeks loving, long term relationship with forever family. Will provide devoted companionship and best behavior even after honeymoon. Contact GALT greyhound matchmakers."

Truely, if you are looking for the most well behaved, loving, snuggling greyhound, Brad is your man. Brad still runs and frolicks like a puppy when he is outside. He'll accompany you on long walks and then still have energy to spare. Or, he'll happily lie by your side. He is happiest when he is leaning his head on you. Or, perhaps he is happiest when getting neck scratches. He turns his head and leans into that massage. He's pretty happy in one of his pretzel sleep positions too. Actually he's pretty happy at meals or at treat times.  He's very happy when it's time for a walk, although he waits very patiently for his lead. Clearly, Brad is just plain happy.

From the time Brad arrived at his foster home, he has been trusted with the run of the house. He has a good signal for needing to be let out or in, can use the doggie door, takes medicine easily, is comfortable in storms, walks well on a lead, rides well in a car, sleeps thru the night, and is easy going with other greyhounds, We haven't seen him play with toys, but he did happily chase a ball outdoors. When he got to it, he pounced on it, grabbed it, and ran off with his "catch". Give Brad just a bit room, and he will delight you with his zoomies.

If all this isn't enough, Brad is great eye candy as well. He is a beautiful, shiny, dark brindle who attracts lots of attention when we're out for a stroll. This wonderful companion needs and richly deserves a loving, appreciative forever home.

INCOMING DOGS

Cosmo, aka JS Cosmo Tini, is a 3 1/2 year old black male born April 14, 2008. His sire is Trent Lee, and his dam is JS Tothelimit. Cosmo has 46 races to his credit on Greyhound-data.com. He started in Palm Beach, Florida on January 16, 2010 and ended at Gulf Greyhound Park in Texas on May 29, 2011. This sweetheart is ready to set your heart throbbing - come meet him soon!

Mooney, aka El Moonstruck, is a 5 year old fawn male born August 20, 2006. His sire is Gable Dodge, and his dam is Ruby Moon, making his grand sire the late, famous Molotov. Mooney had a long career of 180 races! He spent his whole career at Derby Lane in Florida, starting on March 4, 2008 and ending on September 1, 2010. This big boy is ready for retirement, and looks forward to one final race to his forever home. Mooney has not yet been tested with cats or small animals.

Sweetie, aka Prima Sweet Day, is an owner return. She is an 8 1/2 year old brindle female with 75 races to her credit. She went on to be a brood, producing two litters, the first of which was sired by the late famous Dodgem By Design. Sweetie originally came to GALT with 3 other greyhounds from a coyote hunter in Amarillo. She endured some dental work in early 2011 which left her with about 5 teeth, which she puts to good use at meal times. She is very well house trained and looks forward to meeting her forever family. Sweetie is not cat tolerant but can get along with smaller dogs and other greyhounds.

Emery is an approximate 2 1/2 year old fawn male who originally came to GALT as a stray from Bryan, TX. Emery has had a long journey in a short amount of time, as he had to be caught and medically treated for a rear leg injury. He was adopted out but has since been returned and is looking for his forever home!

GREYS IN BOARDING

The dogs at BARK! and Top Paw Resort are ready to go to foster homes.  Please consider giving one of these wonderful greys a foster home and help reduce GALT's boarding fees.  If you are available to foster, even for a short time, contact Jennifer at jennifer@vilches.org.
