New
Traffic Fatality Data
On July 2, the
U.S. Department of Transportation announced that the number of overall traffic
fatalities reported in 2008 hit their lowest level since 1961 and that
fatalities in the first three months of 2009 continue to decrease. The
fatality rate, which accounts for variables like fewer miles traveled, also
reached the lowest level ever recorded.
The fatality
data for 2008 placed the highway death count at 37,261, a drop of 9.7 percent
from 2007. The fatality rate for 2008 was 1.27 persons per 100 million VMT,
about 7 percent below the rate of 1.36 recorded for 2007. Substantial
declines occurred in virtually every major category. Alcohol-impaired
fatalities declined by more than 9 percent over 2007. For the complete
press release, go to www.nhtsa.gov.
In connection with
the press release, NHTSA posted the 2008 Traffic Safety Annual Assessment,
which highlights 2008 traffic fatalities and injuries. Overall fatalities,
alcohol-impaired driving fatalities and the respective changes from 2007
to 2008 are presented for each State. The Crash Stat for the 2008 Annual
Assessment is available HERE.
NHTSA also released estimates of the
fatalities that occurred in the first quarter of 2009, which can be
accessed HERE.
Along with the
above releases the 2007 final FARS data, 2008 Annual FARS data and 2008
NASS GES data files were posted on the FARS FTP server and the FARS query system. The FARS FTP link is: ftp://ftp.nhtsa.dot.gov/fars/ and the FARS Query

NAPPP Offers Training for Peer Training and Certification
Does your organization want to implement adult training to
establish or expand a peer helping program or include a workshop on this topic
in your conference or pre-conference training? Let the National Association of
Peer Program Professionals (NAPPP) assist your organization in this process.
NAPPP is dedicated to promoting excellence in peer programs.
Its membership is adult professionals who are responsible for peer programs.
Peer programs exist in schools, social service agencies, faith communities,
geographic communities, nursing homes and youth organizations.
Peer programs involve people helping other people. When people experience
frustrations, worries, concerns, and other life events, they typically turn to
their friends, not professionals, for help, advice, practical assistance, and
support. Peers do not replace licensed or certified professionals or
practitioners, but often serve as an extension of the services these
professionals provide. Through much research and evaluation, peer programs have
been found to be one of the most proven and effective prevention strategies.
NAPPP offers these peer professional trainings:
· Establish
a Peer Helping Program
· Become a
Trainer of Peer Helpers
· Enhance
Existing Peer Programs
· Peer
Assistance and Leadership (PAL/Workers Assistance Program)
· Evaluation
for Success in Peer Resource Programs: You Can Make a Difference!
· NAPPP
Programmatic Standards and Ethics Tool Kit
NAPPP's Certified Trainers/Consultants deliver the training
to peer professionals using the NAPPP Standards and Ethics as a guiding
principle. The trainers/consultants have shown a high quality of commitment to
the Standards and Ethics of NAPPP and a background in peer program training.
More information on the training offered and the Certified
Trainers/Consultants is available at www.peerprogramprofessinals.org.
As a first step, fill out a Training Questionnaire at the NAPPP website, and a
member of NAPPP's Professional Development Committee will contact interested
organizations/individuals.
The National Association of Peer Program Professionals
(NAPPP) was established after the dissolution of The National Association of
Peer Programs, originally founded in 1984 as the National Peer Helpers
Association. NAPPP is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation whose mission is to
help adults establish, train supervise, maintain and evaluate peer programs.
