NOYS Welcomes new Business & Industry Member
NOYS is happy to announce a new member of the NOYS coalition, DCH Auto Group "Mindless Driving.
Keep It Out Of Cars"
The
concern for teen driving safety is great, as driving statistics bear this
out. Despite these challenging times, DCH Auto Group has reaffirmed its
commitment to promote teen safe driving through their recently launched
program, Mindless Driving. Keep It Out Of CarsŪ; a public awareness campaign that
will help educate teenagers, their families and local communities about the
dangers of destructive decisions behind-the-wheel. Mindless
Driving. Keep It Out of CarsŪ is a DCH exclusive, long term, teen-focused,
safe driving community outreach program and marketing campaign. And "It" is "mindless driving"; knowing the
right way to drive, but still driving the wrong way. These "mindless moments" include driving
distracted, drowsy driving, driving recklessly, and driving under the
influence, to name just a few.
The spokespeople designed specifically for the
campaign are cartoon charters they call "Mind" and "Les" - a metaphor. "Mind" represents the voice of reason, while
its alter ego "Les" represents those mindless decisions. Teens know what they're supposed to do behind
the wheel of a car, but sometimes they do things that go against common sense
and everything they've learned about driving safely. Your head tells you to do one thing, but
instead you do the opposite and drive mindlessly. Hence the metaphor.
The cornerstone of this program is DCH's
affiliation with SADD - Students Against Destructive Decisions. "DCH Auto Group's partnership with SADD is a
natural fit, as both organizations share similar values," says Penny Wells,
SADD'S President and Executive Director. "We are both committed to fostering
responsible behind-the-wheel decisions and the well-being of teenagers in our
community through education and awareness."
In addition to their sponsorship of SADD, DCH has
agreed to help launch new SADD chapters in local area schools. "Our goal is to
help raise awareness about important behavioral decisions when behind the wheel
of a car" states Roy Bavaro, Director of Corporate Marketing and Brand
Development. The goal for the 2008/2009 school year was for DCH
Auto Group to establish at least one new SADD chapter at a middle or high
school in proximity to each DCH dealership.
"Mindless Driving. Keep It out of Cars is a meaningful way
that our organization can help tackle an important community issue head-on,"
states DCH Auto Group
President and CEO Susan Scarola. "Working
closely with our customers, their families and local schools, we believe this
campaign can make an enormous difference to reduce the number of teenage
tragedies behind the wheel. We may never
know for sure, but if our actions save just one life, this will be the best
investment DCH has ever made." NOYS is excited to have DCH Auto as a new Business & Industry member!

Overall Traffic Fatalities Reach Record Low in 2008
The number of overall traffic
fatalities reported in 2008 hit the lowest level since 1961 and fatalities in
the first three months of 2009 continue to decrease. The fatality rate, which accounts
for variables like fewer miles traveled, also reached the lowest level ever
recorded. These encouraging numbers were announced by Transportation Secretary
Ray LaHood on July 2.
The '08 highway death count was 37,261, a drop of 9.7
percent from '07, while the '08 fatality rate was 1.27, about 7 percent below
the rate of 1.36 for '07.

Primary Seatbelt Law Passed!
Arkansas joined Florida and Minnesota in making their seatbelt laws a primary offense. Twenty-nine states have primary seat belt
laws and twenty have secondary laws.
Only one state, New Hampshire,
has no seatbelt law in place for adults.
The difference between a primary and secondary law is that a
law enforcement officer cannot stop you solely because of a violation of
a secondary law. Until June 30, Arkansas
law enforcement officers could not stop a person strictly because the person
was not wearing a seatbelt. The officer
might stop someone for speeding and then issue a citation for not wearing a
seatbelt, but beginning June 30, the seatbelt law became a primary
offense. Congratulations to Arkansas!

Early Mental Health Problems Can
Increase a Child's Risk of Being Victimized
Children entering first grade with
signs of depression and anxiety or excessive aggression are at risk of being
chronically victimized by their classmates by third grade. That's the finding
of a new longitudinal study that appears in the May/June 2009 issue of the
journal Child Development.
"Just as some children learn
to read with greater difficulty than others and require extra assistance when
they begin to lag behind their peers, young children with mental health
problems show signs that they cannot manage the complex social world of
elementary school," said Bonnie J. Leadbeater, professor of psychology at
the University of
Victoria, who led the
study. "Treating children's mental health problems may go a long way
toward reducing bullying."

NAPP Changes
With optimism and thankfulness, the
NAPP Board of Directors is excited to share organizational news with our members,
former members, friends, and partners. For 25 years, originally as the National
Peer Helpers Association and more recently as the National
Association of Peer Programs (NAPP), our mission has been to help adults
establish, train, supervise, maintain and evaluate peer programs. With the NAPP
Standards and Ethics as our guiding principle, we
have helped adult professionals through networking, leadership training,
certification, conferences and programmatic problem solving.
Several months ago, the NAPP Board began
discussions as to how to best fulfill our mission and vision, provide
opportunities to benefit those individuals in the peer helping profession and
to impact a larger audience. Being aware of the reputation and impact of Search
Institute's beliefs in peer helping and asset building, NAPP approached Search
about the possibility of consolidating some of these efforts. Search Institute is an
independent nonprofit organization whose mission is to provide leadership,
knowledge, and resources to promote healthy children, youth, and communities.
Search was receptive to NAPP's inquiries and as a
result, the NAPP Board has voted to dissolve NAPP, effective July 2, and
transfer some of the NAPP assets and information to Search Institute.
Recognizing that Search will not be able to
continue several areas associated with NAPP, we are pleased to announce the
formation of a separate organization, National Association of Peer Program
Professionals (NAPPP), which will continue with many of the programs currently
associated with NAPP. Search Institute and NAPPP will be communicating
with you about specifics.
NAPP is proud of our many
accomplishments thanks to the dedication of members, friends, colleagues, and
peer program leaders who have provided so many positive examples of the power
of peer programs. We hope you share with us the enthusiasm in this new
undertaking and potential to broaden the positive impact of peer programs. The
NAPP Board thanks you for your ongoing involvement in peer programs.
