Hormones are involved in EVERY part of our body's functioning.  This is an important part of health we need to understand well.  Read below to understand how hormones affect our health and well-being, what are the signs of hormonal imbalance, how can we get back in balance and improve our over-all health!

What is a hormone? 

  • A hormone is simply a chemical messenger.  
  • Including estrogen, progesterone, testosterone, DHEA, thyroid, adrenal, and insulin 
  • Today we will focus on the first 4 hormones.  
Estrogen
  • Estrogen excess:  PMS, breast tenderness, migraines, menstrual Estrogen cramps, excessive bleeding, fatigue, anxiety, insomnia.    
  • Estrogen deficiency:  menopause, hot flashes, infertility, dry skin and hair, loss of libido, mood swings.   
  • Benefits:  protects against heart disease, stroke, lowers cholesterol, prevents Alzheimer's, improves memory, prevents osteoporosis 

Progesterone  

  • Excess: fatigue, weight gain, bloating
  • Deficiency:  depression,  PMS, breast tenderness, migraines, heavy bleeding, cramps, insomnia.   
  • Benefits:  protects against fibrocystic breasts, and breast cancer, builds bone, natural anti-depressant, helps normalize blood sugar, zinc and copper levels.  
Testosterone
  • Excess:  angry, irritable, acne 
  • Deficiency:  depression, low energy, low vitality and muscle strength. low libido 
  • Benefits:  keeps cells of the body functioning efficiently, contributes to healthy bones and muscle, increases libido.
DHEA
  • Excess: similiar to high testosterone symptoms 
  • Deficiency:  low energy 
  • Benefits:  used to make other sex hormones, keeps the body in "building" mode instead of "breaking down" mode.  Levels drop sharply at age 50.  
How do I know if I am out of balance?  
  • Your symptoms will help determine this, it is often important to test and confirm the symptom picture.  
  • Get your blood tested for hormone levels 
    • For women testing is most accurate on day 20-21 of menstrual cycle.  Morning levels are more accurate than afternoon.  
  • Saliva testing
    • Very accurate and necessary for some  
    • Test samples can be taken several times over the course of a day, or even a month to fully understand the hormone fluctuations.  

What do I do to BALANCE my hormones? 

  • Depending  on your symptom picture, the duration of your imbalance, and the severity
    • Herbal supplementation be prescribed for a short or long period of time
    • Bio-identical hormones replacement may be needed.  
      • Bio-identical simply means that the hormones are chemically identical to your own body's natural hormones (they are not extracted from human glands)  
      • They are SAFE and effective treatment
    • Acupuncture can be very effective in balancing hormones 
What are the most common imbalances?
  1. Menopause
  2. Testosterone decline in men (MANopause)
  3. PMS (pre-menstrual syndrome)
  4. Irregular or painful menstruation 
  5. Ovarian cysts
  6. Depression and weight gain 
How long is the treatment?
  • Duration depends on the individual.   
  • If the imbalance due to surgical removal of organs, or due to menopause the the duration is longer.  
  • Duration can be as short as 3 months, long enough for the body to begin to produce it's normal levels of hormones again.
