RAFA Flute Choirs Begin Fall Season

 

RAFA now offers four flute choirs for a variety of ages and playing levels. All of the ensembles are gearing up for a new season, so this is the ideal time to come and check out the options. New members are welcome! Click on the links below for details, and contact the appropriate director to schedule a specific audition time or to answer questions about a particular ensemble.

 

Silver Winds

  • No auditions; minimum of two years experience recommended
  • Ideal choir for flutists who are new to the ensemble experience, as well as intermediate and advanced players who have limited time for rehearsals and individual practice
  • Rehearsals: Sundays, 1:45 - 3:00 p.m. (usually 1st & 3rd Sundays of the month)
  • First rehearsal: September 16

Kristin Davis received a degree in Music Education (BM) from the Crane School of Music at the State University of Potsdam (NY) and a master's degree from ECU. She currently teaches privately in the Garner and Clayton  area and directs the Silver Winds Flute Choir.

Kelly Nivison Roudabush is a versatile flutist with expertise in both modern and historical flute performance. She is a doctoral candidate in historical flute performance at the Indiana University's Early Music Institute. Additionally, she holds a minor in music education and modern flute performance from Indiana University, flute performance degrees from Florida State University (M.M.) and Appalachian State University (B.M.), a certificate in early music from Florida State University, and a K-12 music education degree from Appalachian State University (B.M.). She currently teaches privately in the Raleigh area and directs the Silver Pipes Flute Choir.

Sonja Noykos
Sonja Noykos received a Bachelor of Music in Flute Performance from the University of Cincinnati, College-Conservatory of Music in 2005.  While there she studied under Dr. Bradley Garner, Randy Bowman, Jack Wellbaum (piccolo) and Heather Verbeck.  Sonja has placed in or won many local and national flute competitions (nee Nesvig).  She currently directs the Silver Fantasy flute choir, plays in the Raleigh Flute Choir, teaches private lessons, and freelances.  Sonja is also the owner and director of Joyful Song Family Music, which provides Music Together classes for young children and their families. 

 

 

 

 

 

Chapel Hill Flute Choir -- new this year!

Alma Coefman
Born in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Alma Coefman has performed in numerous chamber music concerts in Argentina, Japan, Italy, Canada, and United States, appearing as soloist or as a member of various contemporary and Argentinean-Latin American music ensembles. Currently Alma performs and teaches flute in the Triangle area of North Carolina. 

Second Winds

 

The first meeting of the Second Winds for the 2012-2013 season will be held on Sunday, August 26, at 2:30 in the parlor of St. Philip Lutheran Church on Falls of the Neuse Rd.

 

The Second Winds is a group of adult, amateur flutists who get together every other month to play for each other.  We are understanding, patient, kind, friendly -- supportive of one another in every way.  Playing alone or in a duet is encouraged, though not a requirement.  Join us -- and bring your flute for our warmup even if you are not planning a solo.

Review & Contest

 

RAFA's 28th Annual Review and Contest will be held November 4, 2012. Music list, registration form, and guidelines are available online -- just click on the links below. 

Each participant prepares two solos from the music list and chooses to enter either the Contest (competition) or Review (written feedback only). Students and adults of all ages and levels are encouraged to participate! Deadline to register is October 1. Contact coordinator Mary Croghan with any questions at croghanm@gmail.com.

Three of RAFA's professional flutists present a variety of teaching and practice ideas. Participatory workshops presented by Tadeu Coelho, Catherine LeGrand, and Brooks de Wetter-Smith are designed to inspire RAFA's teachers and aspiring teachers. Bring your flutes and join in the fun!

 

 

Flute Workout: Warm-up exercises that really work your breathing, fingers, intonation and musicality, incorporating body language and musical expression. Presented by Tadeu Coelho.

Tadeu Coelho

Brazilian-born Tadeu Coelho is the Flute professor at UNCSA.  He has taught at UIOWA and UNM and was visiting professor at the Mirkovich Academy in Croatia. Mr. Coelho frequently appears as soloist, chamber musician, and master clinician throughout Europe, Asia, Australia, and the Americas. He is the former first solo flutist of the Santa Fe Symphony, Hofer Symphoniker in Germany, and the Spoleto Festival Orchestra in Italy, among others, including guest appearances with the Boston Symphony in the summer of 1996. Coelho received his DMA degree from the MSM as a student of Baker and Wilson. Started on the flute by his father, he also studied with Nyfenger, Underwood, Lolya, and Ephross, and in Brazil with Rossi, Carrasqueira, and Sagaard.  Mr. Coelho gave his New York recital debut at Weill Recital Hall in April of 1992. Mr. Coelho can be heard in several solo recordings: Live From New Orleans; Azules; Nocturnes; Modernly Classic; 18th Century Flute Sonatas; Flute Music from Brazil; ¡Rompe!, and Life-Drawing.  Dr. Coelho has published several works for flute, including his Flute Workouts with accompanying CDs. Catherine LeGrand

Catherine LeGrand serves as Adjunct Professor of Flute at Campbell University and maintains a private studio in the Triangle area for students of all ages and levels. Her websites provide resources on breathing, flute playing, and creative pedagogy. Catherine performs regularly with pianist Kenneth Grigg in the chamber duo Senza Misura and with guitarist Randy Reed in the LeGrand-Reed Duo; she enjoys combining her passions for teaching, performing and traveling as a frequent guest artist and clinician. She has three albums in current release including Inspirations: Music for Solo Flute. Among her previous teaching contributions, she was Flute Instructor and Flute Choir Director at the School for Creative and Performing Arts in Cincinnati and Flute Consultant at the High School for Performing and Visual Arts in Houston; her students and former students have achieved many national honors. Brooks de Wetter-Smith

is in considerable demand as a recitalist, concerto soloist, and masterclass teacher, having given concerts in 24 nations (Eastern- and Western-Europe, Asia, the Middle East, and South America) and nearly all 50 states. His recordings are available on the Albany, Crystal, Christophorus, Aurophon, Centaur, and Paulinas labels, spanning baroque, romantic, contemporary, and jazz-inspired repertoire. Many of his performances have been broadcast live on radio and television in the U.S., Europe, South America, and Asia. In addition to music, Brooks is a published photographer of images from Antarctica and the High Arctic. He is the James Gordon Hanes Distinguished Professor of Music at UNC.

Kelly Nivison Roudabush was selected to compete as one of six semi-finalists in the NFA Baroque Flute Artist Competition to be held at the NFA Convention in Las Vegas this month. 

 

The semi-final round will take place on Thursday morning (August 9), and the final round will be held Saturday morning (August 11). Kelly, we are so proud of you and wish you all the best!

Christine Meng recently graduated from the University of Virginia with a B.A. in music and English literature. Awarded a Fulbright Teaching Assistantship to teach English in Kaohsiung, Taiwan for the 2012-2013 academic year, Christine also hopes to be involved with the local music community in Kaohsiung by playing in a community ensemble or swapping folksongs with Taiwanese students. Christine has had the privilege of studying with Raleigh flute teachers Diana Cherry and Rosene Rohrer; while at U.Va, she took lessons with Alan Cox, Angela Kelly, and Kelly Sulick.

Congratulations to Sonja & Matt Noykos on the birth of their baby daughter, Lucia Ellen Noykos, on June 26th.  We welcome our youngest RAFA member and look forward to catching glimpses of her at upcoming flute events!   Sonja directs RAFA's Silver Fantasy Flute Choir, performs with the Raleigh Flute Choir, teaches private lessons, and is the owner and director of Joyful Song Family Music.

Helen Spielman delivered the Keynote Address for the Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity Convention in Atlanta, Georgia on August 4th. The title was "Healing Performance Anxiety from Inside Out." She also presented a workshop at the convention. In June, she taught her annual week-long class "Perform Confidently" at Wildacres Flute Retreat and had a lot of fun doing "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me: Flute and Sax Edition" for Skit Night.  In addition, Helen will present a workshop entitled "10 Rubies and Pearls of Wisdom: Vibrant Activities to Boost Confident Performing" at the NFA Convention in Las Vegas (NV) August 9 - 12.

Claire Johnson, a rising senior at Cedar Ridge High School and student of Helen Spielman, spent the summer volunteering at Sneha Kiran, a school for children with cerebral palsy in Mysore, India.  While there, Claire performed for the students and teachers, playing both standard flute repertoire as well as simple rhymes.
